Integrated Math day 9 - University of Idaho

103-Lesson Plan

Integrated Math day 9

Lesson: Understanding the importance of Mathematics in everyday life.

Big Ideas:

1. We use math everyday.

2. We can see math in everything that we do.

3. Math is important to the function of our daily lives.

Daily Quiz 2

1. It cost’s $2.40 for a 12 oz. bottle of shampoo. What is the cost per ounce? Explain how you found it.

2. Pace is a rate measured in minutes per mile. If Tegla Lourope of Kenya set women’s world record in the 1999 Berlin marathon and her time was 2 hours, 20 minutes and 43 seconds, what was her pace? ( A marathon is 26.2 miles long).

Have students write in the math journals (learning logs) about what they already know about the importance of math in their lives and how it's used.

Learning Log 6

Why is math important? Where do we see and use it? Try to list at least 3 examples of ways that you use math.

Read “Math in Daily Life”

Watch Donald in Mathmagic Land.

Discuss what they saw in the video and how it relates to their lives.

Add any new information to the LL6.

Begin working on Math collage.

103-Lesson Plan

Math Collage

30 points

• Create a collage, on a 8 x 11 in. sheet of paper, that describes what math means to you and why it is important.

• Include at least 10 different examples of the uses of math and represent these ideas with pictures.

• Write a short paragraph to describe your collage. You must include ten ways you use math or see math in your everyday life (related to your collage). You must write about how the ten things on your collage are related to mathematics.

(Was the strategy effective? Were students able to read/write as needed in this lesson? What attitudes were displayed? How did specific

students and/or the class do? How did the literacy strategy aid in developing student understanding of the topic? Cite specific evidence from the samples of student work)

Lesson Reflection:

(What worked well with this lesson? What challenges did you encounter in this lesson? Would you change certain aspects of the lesson or the questions that you asked? How does this influence future lesson planning?)

Relationship to Previous Instruction:

(Have you taught this lesson/topic prior to the LIMSST project? If so, how did your teaching of this lesson differ from what you taught before? How did students’ reactions to this lesson differ?)

Understand importance of mathematics

A math journal was used to reflect on prior and learned understanding of the importance of mathematics in every day life.

Also, students created a collage and wrote paragraphs explaining what they learned.

The strategies were effective because it allowed students get a deeper understanding of why mathematics is important. Some of the students complained about having to write in math class but as a whole they did very well. The journal helped students to reflect and organize their thoughts and take a deeper look into the use of math in everyday life.

We watched “Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land”, and students enjoyed the cartoon and were engaged. It gave them a good idea of how we use math in our lives and how everything is related to math. I don’t think I would change any part of the lesson.

I have not taught this lesson before but do plan to teach it again in subsequent years.
