6. Approximate Time Needed:

2 math classes- each math class is 1 hour and 15 minutes

7. PA Content Standard(s):

2.2.3.F- Use concrete objects to determine area and perimeter.

8. Objectives/Lesson Outcomes:

a. The students will determine the area and perimeter of various shapes and objects.

b. The students will design a floor plan for a house and determine the area of different rooms.

9. Materials and Resources Required:

A. Technology (include location and equipment):

Mobile lab to be used in the classroom

Website-

Printer

B. Printed Materials:

Graph paper

C. Other Supplies:

Pencils, rulers, crayons, popsicle sticks, and glue

10. Lesson Procedures:

1. Review the definition of area and perimeter with the students and do some examples on the board.

2. Explain to the students that to practice using area and perimeter they are going be completing a webquest activity on the computer where they will be working with a partner to design their own floor plan for a house and figure out the area for the rooms in the house.

3. Pass out the laptops from the mobile lab to the students and have them log on to the website listed above.

4. Go over the webquest with the students and read through the task and the process with them. Go over the check sheet with them that they will use as they work on their floor plans.

5. Have the students complete the first portion of the webquest where they will visit different sites to practice finding the area and perimeter of various shapes and figures. Walk around and monitor the students as they do this to make sure they understand and can determine the area and perimeters of different figures.

6. As the students finish, assign them a partner and have them complete the final task where they will design a floor plan and find the area of different rooms. Give them the graph paper, rulers, and check sheet they will need to complete the task.

7. Monitor the students as they work in pairs on their floor plans.

8. Collect the students’ completed work and put away the lap tops.

11. Modifications for Differentiated Instruction:

A. Remediation:

Have these students complete the first tasks in the webquests where they visit different sites to find the area and perimeter of different figures. Closely monitor these students as they complete the sites and have them raise their hand once they complete the work on a site to go over it and check it with them. When these students work on the floor plan, their task will be lessened where they will only have to draw and find the area of 2 rooms in the house.

B. Enrichment:

Have these students take their floor plans once they are completed and construct the rooms in their floor plans using popsicle sticks. They must construct their rooms using their measurements of area and perimeter from their floor plan.

12. Student Assessment:

Check over and grade the students’ floor plans and their results of the area for their rooms using the check sheet found on the webquest site. Make sure that they have completed all of the steps in the task and have included all of the necessary information.
