3rd Grade Class: Holt, Staley, Scott

Dear Parents,Welcome to 3rd grade!! I hope that you all had a wonderful, relaxing, fun-filled summer vacation. We are excited to start a new year with your child and hope that they are geared up to learn new things in 3rd grade. This year the students will be changing classes. They will have a homeroom teacher that they will report to every morning. Each student will take ELA (grammar/reading) and Writing with Mrs. Staley; Math with Ms. Scott and Science/Social Studies with Mrs. Holt. As third graders, students are expected to be more responsible and independent. Third grade is a transitional period and students are held accountable for completing their work on time and being able to keep up with their belongings. A supply list is included; it is important that your child comes to school prepared daily with the necessary supplies to ensure that our day is productive. Also, we will be utilizing an agenda this year to write down homework and to communicate notes from school to home and vice versa. They are $5 each. We are asking each parent to be prepared to purchase an agenda by open house. The agendas are available in the front office. Curriculum Now in third grade, they are ready to learn more complex concepts and attempt tougher problems. The curriculum, therefore, covers a wide array of subjects and topics. There will be lots of writing! The students will be introduced to cursive writing every day! We will take the state standards and break them down into terms that the students can understand. Reading is essential to their success. When it comes to math, 3rd graders start solving problems with bigger whole numbers, decimal numbers, and fractions. The curriculum also focuses on area, volume, geometry and graphs. The science curriculum focuses on hands-on learning as students are engaged with projects and assignments. History and social studies involves getting the students familiar with the different countries, states and learning about America’s History. State TestThe Georgia Department of Education will implement a new testing system, the Georgia Milestones Assessment System (Georgia Milestones) during the 2015-2016 academic year. The test replaced both the CRCT and the EOCT. Georgia Milestones will be aligned to the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) and will require more from students than the CRCT and EOCT. In order to better prepare students for college and career and to provide a more realistic picture of academic progress. A major benefit of the test is that it is one consistent testing program across grades 3-12, whereas previously students took a series of individual tests. The new testing system will include open-ended questions to better gauge students’ content mastery.292417590170MathUnit TestQuizzesProjectsJournalsVocabulary Test 400000MathUnit TestQuizzesProjectsJournalsVocabulary Test 427811573552Science/Social StudiesUnit TestQuizzesProjects4000020000Science/Social StudiesUnit TestQuizzesProjectsGrading ELAStudents will be graded in the following: Reading 50%Grammar 30%Spelling/Vocabulary 20%Our Classroom RulesRule #1: Respect others opinions, answers, ideas... This program allows you to receive daily/weekly reports directly to your email or cell phone. Students will earn positive points for “appropriate behaviors” and negative points for “needs to work on” behavior. There will be a system in place to reward students for their behavior. Your childs participation in the Fun Friday activity each week is determined by the amount of points they have at the end of the week. Please provide your email address or a valid cell phone number so that we can begin communicating as early as the first day of school! Agendas/PlannersAgendas are very important! I will use this as a form of communication with parents. Students will also be responsible for writing their homework in the agendas. PLEASE CHECK AGENDAS EVERYDAY!!!ELA /Math/Science/Social Studies/ Writing JournalsThis year students will be using interactive notebooks to keep their work organized. The journals will be used as personalized reference books so students must make sure that they bring them to school every day. Interactive Notebook GuidelinesWhy?To have a useable, working documentUsed for class notes, homework & other activitiesHelp you understand the class study for testsmake connections make sense of what we do in classCOMPLETENESS – All assigned work must be completed to receive full credit.QUALITY – Assignments will be checked in detail for quality of work. Excellent quality means assignments are completed beyond the minimum required. VISUAL APPEAL, NEATNESS, ORGANIZATION – Notebooks should be neat, not crowded with info, and should have a date and title. Key ideas and headings are highlighted. All visuals must be done with care. Handwriting must be legible!! If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up missed work.Importance of BinderThis year we are implementing AVID strategies. One strategy is organization and we are utilizing the 3 inch binder to help our students with organization. It is important that the students have all of their supplies for their success. We have noticed that those students who do not use the binder are less successful than those who use the binder. It is a great way for students to consolidate each subject materials in one place. We will be doing weekly binder checks; this will be a great way to earn extra points. 3155956858000 ................
