When Math Just Doesn’t “Add UP” For Your Student

Make Remedial Math Engaging, Efficient and Effective

The problem:

Understanding and being able to apply mathematics are essential to most of today’s educational and employment opportunities. But many Americans lack the skills needed for many training programs and a majority of careers. A working knowledge of math may never have been learned; or if learned, long since been forgotten.

The Wisconsin Technical College System Foundation, Inc. has created instructional materials designed to help two identifiable groups. The first failed to master the math fundamentals with a traditional classroom-and-textbook approach and the second simply need a flexible, easy-to-access refresher. For over twenty years, ModuMath Courseware has been successfully serving those needs on an on-demand basis in instructional settings ranging from prisons and literacy programs to universities and Fortune 500 training centers. With the release of ModuMath Online, students are now also improving arithmetic and algebra skills conveniently at home.

The solution:

ModuMath differs from other math programs by its comprehensive treatment of these foundation subjects; by the fact that the instruction is fundamentally full motion video and audio (not just text) and because it’s instructional design specifically targets high school age and older remedial learners. ModuMath (on campus or online) includes interactive, adaptive audio/video lessons; prescriptive and competency tests; an integrated student study guide; along with a user-friendly records management system.

ModuMath interactive video instruction:

▪ lets each learner set the pace of instruction

▪ remediates patiently and thoroughly

▪ offers immediate positive reinforcement

▪ holds student attention with continuous interaction

▪ eliminates peer pressure and minimizes math anxiety

▪ enhances the effectiveness of current staff

Interactive technology allows instruction to be individualized to the different subject needs and learning styles of each learner. It also increases flexibility because it can be delivered at a convenient time and place.

ModuMath integrates exciting video tutorials (set in the context of real world applications) with the power and responsiveness of the computer. The graphic visualization of math concepts, the human voice narrative and use of practical examples to introduce abstract math rules and formulas accommodate varied learning styles. Students learn naturally by seeing, hearing and doing.

The computer reinforces student progress and remediates when a student has difficulty. The remediation is patterned after approaches taken by experienced adult instructors and carefully models effective problem solving strategies. ModuMath even advises a student who is struggling when it is appropriate to seek additional assistance.

Designed by educators, ModuMath can be used as an individualized, self-paced course, as a complement to a traditional classroom approach, or as a component in hybrid forms of instruction. As an alternative program, there are a variety of options regarding how the curriculum can be offered to students. In all cases, the instructional design frees an instructor from being locked into lecturing to the mid-range of student ability. He or she is then available to intervene when needed, thus more effectively serving students with a wide range of abilities. As a supplemental learning resource, ModuMath makes available a well-organized and easily accessible body of instructional material.

This instruction empowers and motivates students as they take control of their own learning. ModuMath is today the culmination of two decades of experience designing a student interface whose focus is on the adult, developmental learner. Student control of a confidential learning environment helps to overcome both math anxiety and peer pressure while it promotes self-confidence. Many adults at this level learn faster and demonstrate greater retention. You, in turn, increase student retention.

ModuMath is a non-discriminatory educational alternative. It enables institutions to attract and retain diverse learners, without changing or diluting the existing curriculum. It motivates instructors who gain satisfaction from success in a one-on-one instructional setting. Most important, it’s proven to be the right answer for many for whom math had meant only failure and frustration.
