2. I will learn skills to help me become a mathematician.
• Round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000
• Determine when rounding is appropriate, including before and after computation
• Apply patterns and rules to solve problems
• Use symbols such as ⎢ and • to represent unknowns
• Use symbols to write and evaluate mathematical expressions
• Revisit 2- and 3-digit by 1–digit multiplication (including partial products) and division (including problems with remainders)
• Multiply 2- and 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers
• Know the division facts with understanding and fluency
• Understand and explain the effect on the quotient of multiplying or dividing both the divisor and the dividend by the same number
(e.g. 2050 ÷ 50 = 205 ÷ 5).
• Understand the relationship between the dividend, divisor, quotient, and the remainder.
• Solve problems using mental math and estimation strategies and then determine the reasonableness of the answer/s.
• Apply patterns and rules to solve problems, represent unknowns with symbols such as • and ∆, and use symbols to write and evaluate mathematical expressions
Geometry
• Use tools such as a protractor or angle ruler, and other methods such as paper folding, drawing a diagonal in a square to measure angles
• Understand the meaning and measure of a half rotation (180°) and a full rotation (360˚)
• Determine that the sum of the three angles of a triangle is always 180°
• Examine and compare angles in order to classify and identify triangles by their angles
• Describe parallel and perpendicular lines in plane figures
• Examine and classify quadrilaterals including parallelograms, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, rhombi
• Compare and contrast relationships among quadrilaterals
• Understand and apply ordered pairs in the first quadrant of the coordinate system
• Locate a point in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane and name the ordered pair
• Graph ordered pairs in the first quadrant
