All students need to have lined paper, pencils (at least 2), and at least one pen (blue or black).What’s happening in fifth grade this month?Reading: Literature – Comparing characters, settings, and events; explaining the plot structure and the point of view; continuing to identify the theme of the story and supporting it with evidence from the text. Informational Text – Identifying the main idea and key details in an informational text. Identifying what each author wants the reader to know. How does the text structure of a passage help to make its purpose clear? We will be focusing on the text structures of cause-effect and compare-contrast. Language/Vocabulary – Understanding and accurately using content-specific vocabulary; homonyms, singular and plural nouns, and expanding sentences. Writing: Students are working are three writing projects:Opinion - Should school be year-round? Students will be researching both sides of this argument, forming an opinion, then use evidence to support their rmative - Students will read about and write a short biography on either a patriot or loyalist from the American Revolution period. Number and Operations – Fractions – Students will be adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators including mixed numbers. Students will apply their understanding of fractions to solve word problems. Math 5/6:Students will continue to apply their understanding of ratios and rates to solve real life examples. Students will use double number lines, tape diagrams and equations to solve problems involving ratios and rates. Students will also develop a deeper understanding of how to divide fractions. Science: The students will be learning how waves are used to transmit digitized information over long distances. They will explore how devices that use waves are used in everyday life such as GPS, cell phones, etc.Social Studies: Students have begun to study the various taxes and laws that were placed upon the colonists after the Seven Years’ War and why the colonists opposed them. The students are also learning about the causes and events that led to the American Revolution. ................
