I am looking forward to teaching you this year both remotely and hopefully someday in person. Organization and perseverance are the keys to success and I cannot emphasize that enough. Set aside a quiet place at home for studying. If you are having trouble, come and get help immediately during my tutoring hours. Be a participant and not a spectator. Ask questions, if you have a question do not be afraid to ask, most of the time someone else has the same question. We all make mistakes including myself so don’t be afraid to take risks. Mathematics is all around us. To be a smart consumer, a good citizen, and have a successful career, you need to understand mathematics in the context of business and personal finance. Financial literacy is the ability to use knowledge and skills to manage one’s financial resources effectively for lifetime financial security. This class will help you become financially literate. You will learn how to use math in everyday business and personal situations. Course Outline:Here is an overview of the concepts we will be learning this year based on the TUSD Scope and Sequence:Quarter 1Employment BasicsBanking ServicesQuarter 2Consumer CreditLoansQuarter 3AutomobilesIndependent LivingQuarter 4TaxesBudgetingGrading Policy: Parents and students please refer to TUSD Board Policy IKA-R posted on the TUSD website.Overall grades will be determined based on the following percentage breakdown:Tests 40%Projects25%Assignments and Quizzes20%Final Exam15%The grading scale is as follows:90% - 100%A80% - 89%B70% - 79%C60% - 69%DBelow 60%FGrades can also be accessed 24/7 through ParentVUE and StudentVUE. The final report card that you will receive at the end of the semester is placed on your permanent record. The first three report cards are progress grades. Make sure to keep all your notes and tests for review. Make Up Work/Late Work: Per TUSD Board Policy: All make-up work needs to be completed within the same amount of time as students are excused. Students are responsible to get missing assignments before or after class. Students are to come in\during teacher office hours to make up work. Please discuss with classroom teacher /counselor in advance of any known absences/extended illnesses. Classroom Procedures and ExpectationsPlease follow these simple guidelines for classroom behavior:Be there: Be on time and use your full name. Please keep your video on and stay muted unless speaking. All Zoom meetings will be recorded per TUSD requirements.Be prepared: Assign yourself a quiet working space and have materials ready when class begins.Be respectful: Respect others and their property. Everyone has a right to learn. Take turns talking, only one person talking at a time. All students need to follow appropriate dress code, behavior, and TUSD expectations explained in the students rights and responsibilities handbook. So please make sure you and your background are school appropriate. Be involved: Please participate, stay on task, limit distractions, and avoid multitasking. No electronic devices during class time. You are expected to learn and you cannot do this if you are listening to music or texting your friends.Attendance: You are expected to come to class every day and be on time. Attendance will be taken the first 10 minutes of class. Students who have 10 or more unexcused classes per semester (August-December or January-May) may not pass the course, unless an attendance appeal is completed and approved. Please call in any absence to Cholla’s attendance line at (520) 225-4202.Tardies: Please do not be tardy. Tardies mean missed instructional time. If you are not there for more than half of the period, that equals an absence. A tardy in the system could cause an automated attendance call home. Homework: Students are expected to complete all homework and turn in assignments within two days of it being assigned. It is expected that the students will attempt the homework the first day and come with questions that can be answered during tutoring hours on the next day. Students will lose points on assignments for incomplete and late work. I will accept late homework up until the day of the assessment; it must be submitted before you take the assessment, not after.Bellwork and classwork: Expect there to be bellwork on the board as you walk into the classroom. You will have about five minutes to work on the problems and then we will go over the answers with the class. Classwork will be assigned and collected the same day.Projects: There will be projects in this class. Each project will require a summation of concepts covered in class. These projects can span over several weeks and broken out into several components, each with their own deadlines. There will be a detailed set of instructions for each project that will be given to you at a later date.Tests and quizzes:Quizzes will be announced ahead of time, there will be no surprise quizzes. Tests will be given at the end of each unit and will cover all the material in that unit. Quizzes will be worth 20-50 points and tests will be worth 100 points. Final exams will be cumulative and be worth 15% of your overall semester grade. If a student misses an assessment, he/she must make arrangements with their teacher to make up the assessment within the second day of returning to school.Food and Drink: No food or drink may be brought in to the classroom with the exception of bottled water. Disciplinary Policy: Parents and Students please refer to TUSD website for Board Policy GSRR.
