Unit 1
Measuring units and conversions
In Grades 10 and 11, you worked with measuring units for time, length and
distance, temperature, mass, volume, area and perimeter. You also used
conversion factors to convert between metric and imperial measuring units,
to work out costs of materials given the unit costs, and to adapt recipes, plans
and other instructions for different sizes and quantities of final products. In
Grade 12, you will use and extend these skills as you work with a range of
measurement tasks in different contexts.
Conversion tables
The most common tools available to help you with conversions of measuring
units are conversion tables.
The tables you will need for the main conversions in this course are in the
basic skills section (see pages 496 to 500).
Formulae for converting temperature
Do you remember how to convert temperatures from Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Internet conversion tools
Many websites offer tools to convert a quantity from one measuring unit to
another. For example, is easy to use to convert
almost any measurement you will need.
1.1 Test your conversion skills
You may use the appropriate conversion tables on pages 496 to 500 to do the
conversions.
1. Convert 9,553 m to:
a. centimetres (cm)
b. millimetres (mm)
c. feet (ft)

24. For these conversions, first convert the distance unit and keep the time unit
the same, then convert the time unit.
Example: 30 km/h = 30 000 m/h = 30 000 m/60 min.
= (30 000 ¡Â 60) m/min. = 500 m/min.)
Convert 100 km/h to:
a. metres per minute (m/min.)
b. centimetres per second (cm/s)
c. millimetres per millisecond (mm/ms)
Using conversions to make practical decisions
Example
Which is the best buy: _41 kg Irish butter for R29,30 or 400 g New Zealand
butter for R41,20?
To answer the question, start by finding the unit price per gram of butter.
_
1
4 kg = 250 g
1 g Irish butter costs R29,30 ¡Â 250 = R0,1172 ¡Ö R0,11/g
(Round off to two decimal places.)
1 g New Zealand butter costs R41,20 ¡Â 400 = R0,103 ¡Ö R0,10
(Round off to two decimal places.)
So, the New Zealand butter is the better buy.

sent to a construction company in the United States of America (USA)
that wants to use it for a new housing estate.
b. Draw an enlargement of the plan that is three times bigger than the
current scale. Add a scale bar to show the new scale.
c. Fifty-five families who have been living on a plot with an area of 0,5 ha
want to apply for low-cost housing to be built on the land. If one house
has a ground floor area of 20 m2, will it be possible to build a house
according to the above plan for each family on this piece of land?
(Assume that the shape of the plot allows for the maximum number
of houses to be built.)
d. Will there be land available on the plot for each family to have a
garden or yard attached to their house? If so, how much land will
each family have?
