General course description: Prerequisite: Math 110. This course will cover basic concepts in algebra, functions, probability, and statistics that are appropriate for prospective teachers.

Textbook:

Topical outline: Functions, relations, graphs of functions and relations, systems of equations, slope and intercepts of a straight line, sequences, probability, data analysis, and descriptive statistics.

Student learning outcomes: Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

Find probabilities.

Understand the difference between independent and dependent events and between mutually exclusive and non-mutually exclusive events.

Use tree diagrams to model multistage experiments.

Use simulations to model probabilities.

Understand the difference between categorical and numerical data.

Use appropriate graphical displays to represent data.

Compute the median, interquartile range and outliers of a data set and graph with a box plot.

Compute the mean, mean absolute deviation, variance, and standard deviation of a data set.

Determine the domain and range of a relation.

List the ordered pairs in a relation, given a description of the relation.

Determine whether a given relation is a function.

Graph relations and elementary functions (linear, quadratic, cubic, reciprocal).

Solve a system of two linear equations algebraically.

Understand the equation of a circle in standard form.

Use the slope of a line and other information to find the equation of that line.

Find terms of a sequence, given the formula for the sequence.

Find terms of a recursively defined sequence

Find the nth term and the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence.

Find the nth term of a geometric sequence.

This course is graded ABC/NC for undergraduate students, and AB/NC for graduate students.

Requirements:

Grading system:

ADA statement: Reasonable accommodation will be provided to any student who is registered with the Office of Students with Disabilities and requests needed accommodation.

Academic honesty statement: Students are expected to do their own work. Copying the work of others, cheating on exams, and similar violations will be reported to the University Discipline Officer, who has the authority to take disciplinary actions against students who violate the standards of academic honesty.

Student responsibilities: Students are responsible for being aware of all announcements that are made in class, such as changes in exam dates, due dates of homework and papers, and cancellation of class due to instructor’s absence. Students are responsible for announcements made on days that they are absent.

Students must check their CSULA email account regularly for information from the instructor and the Department. Failure to do so may result in missed deadlines or other consequences that might adversely affect students. Note that you can forward this email account to any other account of your choosing.
