INTRODUCTION

Many of us remember when we were children, how often we did competitive things like racing. All the kids would get on a line while someone would shout out, “READY, SET, GO” and we would all dash for the finish line. What we played as children was done competitively, but in our Lord’s lesson this week the participants labored cooperatively and non-competitively, for Romans 12:5 states in the New American Standard Bible: “So we, who are many are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”

We are excited to share this post-resurrection lesson that points believers of all ages to be co-laborers with the Risen Christ in declaring the fact, “Christ is Risen…Christ is Risen Indeed!” But not only is Christ risen from the dead, but He has a mandate for His disciples of past, present and future to boldly declare the Good News that: “But as many as received Him, to them gave He the right to be children of God, to those that believe on His name.”

Now beloved, let us get behind the starting line and check our Christian credentials that we might join the first century Christians in spreading the good news of the risen Christ to His laborers for all time. We will walk through Matthew 28:16-20 and Acts 1:6-8. Let us stand at the starting line as we hear the voice of the Lord shouting: “READY, SET, GO!”

Anticipated Power Points:

• The Apostles Answered the Call. Matthew 28:16-17

• The Apostles are Assured of Christ’s Authority. Matthew 28:18-20

• The Apostles were Advised to Maintain the Assignment. Acts 1:6-7

• The Apostles would be Adequately Provided For. Acts 1:8

So Beloved, “Ready, Set, Go!”

OUTLINE

I. The Apostles Answered the Call. Matthew 28:16-17

On last week we shouted at the power of the resurrection. Earthquakes, fainting soldiers, awesome angels, and faithful women working their way to the tomb where days earlier they saw the lifeless desecrated body of their Saviour buried in Joseph’s tomb (Luke 23:49-56). We also learned that one of the angels gave the faithful women a message for Peter and the Lord’s disciples, to meet Him in Galilee.

Note This: No matter how you and I looked at the situation, the Apostles Answered the Call! Praise God!

II. The Apostles are Assured of Christ’s Authority. Matthew 28:18-20

Note by Wiersbe: “In this verse the word Power means Authority, the right to use power. The entire Gospel of Matthew stressed the authority of Jesus Christ…authority in healing (Matt. 8:1-13); His teaching (Matt. 7:29); to forgive sins (Matt. 9:6). At the close of his Gospel, Matthew made it clear that Jesus has ALL authority.”

III. The Apostles were Advised to Maintain the Assignment. Acts 1:6-7

The commissioning of the Apostles and followers of Jesus Christ now comes to the last day before Jesus ascends back to Heaven. The Book of Acts teaches us that Jesus, after His resurrection, sought to prepare His followers for a great spiritual journey that would reach beyond Israel’s restoration and kingdom to literally reach the whole world and countless human beings, reaching even to our very day and beyond. Oh, what love of the Son of God and the price He paid “For Us All,” “Ready, Set, Go!” our lesson title encourages the disciples and followers of past, present and future to be steadfast and unmovable. Ready and Set for the defense of the Gospel and willing to Go, even to the end of the age!

IV. The Apostles (and Followers) would be Adequately Provided For. Acts 1:8

Jesus promises that the true followers would receive everything necessary to accomplish the task of spreading the world- wide message of salvation and the Father’s will. Nothing would happen without the Holy Spirit, the Third personality of the God-Head, who would not just be with them but in them. John 16:13-14, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.  He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”

CLOSING

Beloved, there are many things I would like to say, but time and space fail me, so “READY, SET, GO!” and to God be the Glory as we labor together with the same Word and Spirit that empowered the Apostles and early church even now and forever!
