"He Went A Little Farther!"

Matthew 26:36-46

INTRO. 2 Corinthians 8:9 says, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.” He left the portals of glory, made Himself of no reputation, took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. Marvin P. Dalton, inspired no doubt by the Spirit of God wrote in his beautiful hymn, "What a Savior," “He left the Father with all His Riches, with calmness sweet and serene, Came down from Heaven and gave His Life-Blood, to make the vilest sinner clean. O, What A Savior!”

I'd like to title the message, "He Went A Little Farther!" Look how far he had already come! Out of the rapture of Heaven into a world of woe! From the pinnacle of glory to the poverty of a Bethlehem barn! All the long way from the bosom of His Father to the womb of the Virgin. He had gone to Bethlehem, to Egypt, to Nazareth, to Capernaum and the Lake Country around and about Galilee, as a penniless preacher, a pilgrim prophet, a homeless stranger in a world His hands had made. And now He Went A Little Farther!

He was on a mission from His Father and He couldn't, mustn't and wouldn't turn back without completing His work. Every step He took brought Him closer to that dreadful day of sorrow He must endure, yet He Went A Little Farther! He was ridiculed, mocked, laughed at, beaten, bruised, and eventually crucified. Yet He Went A Little Farther!

Jesus told His disciples in the Sermon on the Mount, "And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain." (Matthew 5:41). He went that "second mile" for us! He suffered more for us than we could ever in our lifetime of service pay back to Him. I want us to trace His final steps for us, see where He went and what He faced for us, and the victories He gained for us.

HE WENT TO:

(1) Gethsemane--Victory Over The Flesh

Text: Matthew 26:36-46

A. THE PLACE OF HIS SUFFERING. In Matthew 26:36 we read, “Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.” The word Gethsemane is from an Aramaic word which means “Oil press.” This suggests the presence of an olive grove. Robertson in his word pictures writes: “The place (cho¯rion) was an enclosed plot or estate, “garden,” or orchard.” (Robertson’s Word Pictures). It was in this place that all the forces of Satan would assail our Lord and Savior. He would be pressed like the oil from the olives of the olive trees nearby.

B. THE PURPOSE OF HIS SUFFERING. The purpose of His suffering in

Gethsemane can be summed up in one word: LOVE! Matthew Henry

put it this way: “He who made atonement for the sins of mankind,

submitted himself in a garden of suffering, to the will of God, from

which man had revolted in a garden of pleasure…He was willing to

submit to all for our redemption and salvation.” (Matthew Henry’s

Concise Commentary). 1 Peter 3:18 tells us, “For Christ also hath once

suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God,

being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.” The

suffering He faced in that Garden was merely a prelude to the intense

agony He would face for all mankind on the Cross! Because of His

suffering for us, we NOW can experience victory Over the flesh! Paul

declared in Galatians 2:20—“ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I

live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the

flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself

for me.” Because of Christ’s willingness to suffer and die for us, NOW

we can live for HIM!

ILLUS: The hymn writer wrote:

IN GETHSEMANE ALONE

Oh, what wondrous love I see,

Freely shown for you and me,

By the One Who did atone!

Just to show His matchless grace,

Jesus suffered for the race,

In Gethsemane, alone.

Refrain

Oh, what love, matchless love,

Oh, what love for me was shown!

His forever I will be,

For the love He gave to me,

When He suffered all alone.

“Tarry here,” He told the three,

“Tarry here and watch for Me,”

But they heard no bitter moan;

For the three disciples slept

While my loving Savior wept

In Gethsemane, alone.

Refrain

Long in anguish deep was He,

Weeping there for you and me,

For our sin to Him was known;

We should love Him evermore

For the anguish that He bore

In Gethsemane, alone.

Refrain

HE WENT A LITTLE FARTHER! He went to GETHSEMANE where He gained VICTORY OVER THE FLESH. But also He went to…

(2) Gabbatha--Victory Over The World

John 19:1-13

A. HIS TRIAL. John 19:10-13 tells us, “Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.” The word Gabbatha in the Aramaic means "pavement"--"paved with stones." It is here our LORD was interrogated, tried, convicted, and sentenced by Pilate.

B. HIS TRIUMPH. Jesus told Pilate, “Thou couldest have no power at all

against me, except it were given thee from above…”. In essence, the

Lord said, “[Pilate], God has ordered your life, your circumstances, and

the extent of your dominion.” (Albert Barnes’ Notes On The Bible). The

Lord’s power is shown as Jesus assumes the role of Pilate’s judge. Even

in his trial, the Lord was victorious over the world. Because of Christ's

Victory, we can have VICTORY over the world! 1 John 5:4-5. Because

He has given to us of His Spirit we can be overcomers and have victory

over the world (Romans 8:14-18)!

HE WENT A LITTLE FARTHER! He went to GETHSEMANE where He gained VICTORY OVER THE FLESH, He went to GABBATHA where He gained VICTORY OVER THE WORLD and He went to…

(3) Golgotha--Victory Over Satan

Matthew 27:33-50

A. THE VIOLENCE AT CALVARY. Matthew 27:33 says, “And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull.” Never was there violence seen to the extent of the violence the Son of God endured for you and me at Calvary! Isaiah 52:14, a prophecy concerning Jesus’ suffering on the Cross says, “As many were astonished at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men.” Commenting on this verse, Scofield wrote: The literal rendering is terrible: "So marred from the form of man was His aspect that His appearance was not that of a son of man" -- that is, not human -- the effect of the brutalities described in (Mat_26:67); (Mat_26:68); (Mat_27:27-30). At Calvary, the Savior endured:

• REPROACH (Psalm 22:6).

• RIDICULE (Psalm 22:7-8).

• RIVETING PAIN (Psalm 22:12-18).

B. THE VICTORY AT CALVARY. All of Satan's power was at work that

day, yet Christ won the VICTORY! John 19:30 says, “When Jesus

therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed

his head, and gave up the ghost.” “It is finished,” those words are the

cry of the victor! Adam Clarke writes it was “As if he had said: “I have

executed the great designs of the Almighty - I have satisfied the

demands of his justice - I have accomplished all that was written in the

prophets, and suffered the utmost malice of my enemies; and now the

way to the holy of holies is made manifest through my blood.” (Adam

Clarke’s Commentary on The Bible). Because of Christ’s victory there

that day We can have VICTORY over Satan also! (1 Peter 5:8-9). How

can we be victorious over Satan? :

• BY RESTING IN THE BLOOD (Revelation 12:11).

• BY REALIZING WE ARE IN A BATTLE (Ephesians 6:10-18; 2 Corinthians 10:3-4).

• BY RAISING THE GOSPEL BANNER (ISAIAH 59:19).

HE WENT A LITTLE FARTHER! He went to GETHSEMANE to gain VICTORY OVER THE FLESH, He went to GABBATHA to gain VICTORY OVER THE WORLD, He went to GOLGOTHA to gain VICTORY OVER SATAN and He went to the…

(4) Grave--Victory Over Death And Hell

Matthew 27:57-61; 28:1-6

A. WHAT HIS RESURRECTION PROVED. Without Christ’s resurrection from the dead we are as Paul declared, “….we are of all men most miserable.” (1 Corinthians 15:19b). But thank God He did arise! Matthew 28:6 says, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.” What does the resurrection prove? :

• CHRIST’S DEITY (John 1:1-3; 14; 1 John 3:8b).

• CHRIST’S DESTINY (Matthew 16:21; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1-2).

B. WHAT HIS RESURRECTION PROVIDED. Christ’s resurrection gave

all who believe victory over the grave. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57

declares, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks

be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Death for the Christian is merely a home-going! As 2 Corinthians

5:1-8 tells us, “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle

were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with

hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring

to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that

being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this

tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be

unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.

Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also

hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. Therefore we are always

confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are

absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are

confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be

present with the Lord.”

ILLUS: All these questions have the same answer.

What is it that gives a widow courage as she stands beside a

fresh grave?

What is the ultimate hope of the cripple, the amputee, the

abused, the burn victim?

How can the parents of brain-damaged or physically

handicapped children keep from living their entire lives totally

and completely depressed?

Why would anyone who is blind or deaf or paralyzed be

encouraged when they think of the life beyond?

How can we see past the martyrdom of some helpless hostage

or devoted missionary?

Where do the thoughts of a young couple go when they finally

recover from the grief of losing their baby?

When a family receives the tragic news that a little daughter

was found dead or their dad was killed in a plane crash or a

son overdosed on drugs, what single truth becomes their whole

focus?

What is the final answer to pain, mourning, senility, insanity,

terminal diseases, sudden calamities, and fatal accidents?

By now you've guessed correctly: the hope of bodily

resurrection.

HE WENT A LITTLE FARTHER! He went to GETHSEMANE to gain VICTORY OVER THE FLESH, He went to GABBATHA to gain VICTORY OVER THE WORLD, He went to GOLGOTHA to gain VICTORY OVER SATAN and He went to the GRAVE to gain VICTORY OVER DEATH AND HELL, and finally He went to…

(5) Glory--Victory Over Time And Space

1 Timothy 3:16—“ And without controversy great is the mystery of

godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the

Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on

in the world, received up into glory.”

A. CHRIST’S WORK IN GLORY (Hebrews 7:25).

B. CHRIST WILL RECEIVE UP TO GLORY (John 14:1-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).

CLOSING: Consider how far He has come for you today! The pain, the ridicule, the rejection, and the cruel Cross, just to redeem your soul! He went a little farther for you, Will you come to Him today?

Brothers & sisters-in Christ, look at how far He has come for us! I ask you, "Will you go on for Him, go that "second mile" for Christ and His cause?" He has came SO FAR for you! David said: "What shall I render unto the LORD for all His benefits toward me?" (Psalm 116:12).
