INTRODUCTION

Beloved, we have come to the last lesson in our series from “the Sermon on the Mount.” From Chapters 5–7 of Matthew, we have studied the right attitudes for Kingdom living under the King Jesus Christ. We thank God for understanding what type of attitudes are required by the King of Kings, the true Keeper of the Law of God, who is Jesus Christ. The kind of mind and attitude necessary to please the King. The seriousness of avoiding hypocrisy as a kingdom citizen. The real meaning of Agapé Love! Also, the spirit of God’s Law and how it bathes the hearts, minds and souls of God’s people!

Our final focus of Sound Advice for God’s Sincere Saints is found in Matthew Chapter Seven. Let us walk through the pages of God’s sacred Book and glean the mind and heart of God for His Sincere Saints! Follow my outline as we glean.

LESSON OUTLINE

I. Avoid Self-Righteous Judgment of Others. Matthew 7:1-6 (NLT)

“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.  For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own?  How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye?  Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.  Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.”

The verses speak for themselves but note: (Life Application Bible Notes), “Jesus tells us to examine our own motives and conduct instead of judging others…Our bad habits and behavior patterns are the very ones that we most want to change in others.” Being a hypocrite is shameful, but being a self-deceived hypocrite is ridiculous!

II. Pray with Consistency. Matthew 7:7-11 (NLT)

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.  You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead?  Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not!  So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”

Dr. John Rice defines prayer as asking! “Ask, Seek, Knock.” If we don’t ask, we’re not praying. And because we are asking our Heavenly Father, we know He is better than us who are earthly fathers. He will not give us anything that will destroy us! His answer to our prayers will fit our needs and desires! (Read Proverbs 3:5-6).

III. Remember the “Golden Rule.” Matthew 7:12 (NLT)

“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”

Dr. John MacArthur says, “How we treat others is not to be determined by how we expect them to treat us or by how we think they should treat us, but by how we want them to treat us.”

IV. The Narrow Way Versus the Broad Way. Matthew 7:13-14 (NLT)

“You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way.  But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”

“The gate that leads to eternal life (Jn. 10:7-9) is ‘narrow.’ This does not mean that it is difficult to become a Christian but that there is only one way to eternal life with God and that only a few decide to walk that road.” The cost of narrow living is high!

V. Watch the Fruit of Trees (The Preachers). Matthew 7:15-20 (NLT)

“Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.  You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?  A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.  A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit.  So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.  Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.”

Please examine the fruit of trees like people! If it is a pear, it will not look like a banana. And remember, “birds of a feather flock together.” Be very discerning.

VI. Genuine vs. Counterfeit. Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.  On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’  But I will reply, I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.”

Know your Bible so that anyone peddling anything other than the truth will be rejected. There is a difference between “professors and possessors.”

VII. Discern Between “The Firm and The Flimsy Foundations.” Matthew 7:24-27

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.  Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.  But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand.  When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

The flimsy is sinking sand and cannot be trusted to secure a building in the day of testing.

CLOSING

Beloved, on what or who are you building? God’s Word presents Solid Advice for Sincere Saints! Remember, “Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness…On Christ the solid Rock we stand, all other ground is sinking sand!”
