Current Research Projects

Time Restricted Feeding as a Weight Loss Intervention in Overweight and Obese Adults. This randomized controlled trial examines the effects of 12-weeks + 6 months of follow up of time restricted feeding during caloric restriction on weight loss and metabolic outcomes in individuals with overweight and obesity. Role: co-PI

The Effects of Resistance Training on Appetite Regulation. The major goals of this project are to examine the effects of a 12 week resistance training intervention on the neuronal, hormonal and behavior regulation of food intake in individuals with overweight/obesity. Actively enrolling, study visits in progress. Role: PI

A mindfulness intervention for weight loss maintenance: a pilot and feasibility study. The major goal of this project is to begin to examine the effects of a mindfulness intervention on weight loss maintenance. Role: PI.

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of a Reverse Diet as a Novel Weight Loss Maintenance Strategy for Weight-Reduced Adults with Overweight/Obesity. The major goal is to evaluate the feasibility of having adults who are weight reduced adhere to a regimented “reverse diet” protocol as a weight loss maintenance strategy. Role: co-investigator.

The Effects of Age on Appetite Regulation. The major goals of this project are to examine the neuronal, hormonal, and behavioral regulation of energy intake in older aged individuals who are obese as compared to those who are lean and to further compare these individuals to younger adults. Role: PI

The Role of Acute Exercise Modality on Appetite Regulation and Energy Intake. The overall aim of this study is to compare how acute exercise modality (resistance exercise vs. aerobic exercise) differentially influence hormonal and behavioral indices of appetite regulation and ad libitum energy intake. Both conditions will also be compared to a non-exercise control condition. Actively enrolling, study visits in progress. Role: co-investigator

The Effects of a Selective Nicotinic Agonist on Body Weight and Appetite Regulation in Individuals with Overweight/Obesity. The major goals of this project are to examine the effects of a 12 weeks of a nicotinic agonist as compared to placebo on body weight and composition and on the neuronal, hormonal, and behavioral regulation of energy intake in individuals with overweight or obesity. Actively enrolling, study visits in progress. Role: co-investigator

The Effects of Exercise on Appetite Regulation in Individuals with Schizophrenia. The major goals of this project are to examine the effects of exercise on the neuronal, hormonal and behavior regulation of food intake in patients with schizophrenia and overweight/obesity. Actively enrolling, study visits in progress. Role: co-PI

The Effects of Exercise on Appetite Regulation in Overweight/Obese Individuals. The major goals of this project are to examine the effects of a 12 week aerobic exercise intervention on the neuronal, hormonal, and behavioral regulation of energy intake in those who lose weight with exercise as opposed to those who do not and to examine predictors of response. Actively enrolling, study visits in progress. Role: co-investigator

Neuronal Responses to Effective Weight Loss Maintenance Strategies. The major goals of this project are to examine the effects of: 1) gastric bypass surgery as compared to gastric banding surgery and diet control on the neuronal, hormonal, and behavioral regulation of energy intake; 2) exercise as compared to diet during weight loss maintenance on the neuronal, hormonal, and behavioral regulation of energy intake. Study visits completed. Data analysis in progress. Role: co-PI

The Effects of Energy Imbalance on Food Intake Behaviors. The major goals of this project are to examine the effects of short-term positive and negative energy balance on neuronal, hormonal, and behavioral regulation of energy intake in individuals resistant and prone to weight gain and how these responses predict longitudinal weight gain. Studies completed, long-term weight gain data being collected and analyses in progress. Role: PI

Veteran Affairs Merit Review Award I01 CX001949 (Legget), 10/1/19-9/30/23, Sex effects on the neurobiology of eating behaviors in Veterans with overweight/obesity. The overall goals of this project are to better understand sex-based differences in the neurobiology underlying hedonic eating behaviors and food-based reward processing, how gonadal hormones contribute to these differences, and how this translates to real-life eating behaviors in Veterans. Role: co-investigator.
