Instructions on calculating sample mean and sample standard deviation on TI-85
1. Press STAT This opens up the statistics menu.
2. Press F2 This selects the EDIT option.
3. Press ENTER twice This tells the calculator that you will save the
sample data in variables called xStat and yStat.
4. Press F5 This selects the CLRxy option.
You want to do this so that it clears any previously
saved sample data.
5. Start entering your sample data. We only care about the xStat list. We leave yStat equal to all 1’s. For example, if we wish to enter {5.4, 4.1, 6.7} as our sample data, our screen would look like this:
x1 = 5.7
y1 = 1
x2 = 4.4
y2 = 1
x3 = 6.1
y3 = 1
The keystrokes would be as follows: 5 . 7 ↓ ↓ 4 . 4 ↓ ↓ 6 . 1
6. Press 2ND M1 This selects the CALC option.
7. Press ENTER twice This tells the calculator that you want to perform
calculations using the 2 lists named xStat and yStat.
8. Press F1 This selects the 1-VAR option.
9. The first line of the output is the sample mean.
The fourth line of the output is the sample standard deviation.
Using our previous example, sample mean = 5.4
sample standard deviation = 0.888819441732
10. Press EXIT twice This exits from the statistics menu.
