Written Analysis 4Richard JettHUMN240Professor Jenifer GareySeptember 18, 2015Written Analysis 4: TattoosFormula is a category of popular culture that is very similar to a job aid. It tells a person what to do and in what order to do it. According to Profiles of Popular Culture, formula tells where one wants to go and what roads to use to make the journey (Browne, 2005). It is very similar to mythical category of popular culture; however, formula tries to take all parts of a story and put them together. From an article in the Journal of Popular Culture, it calls our attention to the whole experience of the story rather than whatever parts may be germane to the story we’re reporting (Cawelti, 1974).When we think about tattoos, we tend to think about a picture or words inked on someone’s body. Some of these tattoos may have a mythical meaning which one can tell just by looking at the tattoo, but the full story of the tattoo is not known. Let’s take the dragon tattoo, for example. This is a very common tattoo; one that you might see on an arm, leg, or back of a person because they are considered mythical or legendary. “Dragons have the capacity to express the best and the worst of the human condition…as well as everything in between (Avia Venefica, 2015).” It’s common knowledge that the meaning of the Chinese dragon is luck. And, among other countries, the dragon can mean greed and chaos. So, as one approaches a person with a dragon tattoo, one can quickly form their own idea about what the dragon means. However, the story behind a tattoo is not known just by looking at it. This is where the concept of formula can come into play with tattoos. When was the decision made to get the tattoo? Why was a dragon chosen, and what meaning does it have to that person? Did something happen in this person’s life to push them towards getting a tattoo? These are just some of the questions one can ask to find out the whole story and not just focus on the image of the tattoo itself. References. Avia Venefica. (2015). Dragon tattoo meanings.
