JOB TITLE: High School Counselor

CLASSIFICATION: Certified

SUPERVISOR: Building Principal

JOB CODE: 2040

CONTRACT: 200 Days

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The counselor is responsible for educational, vocational, and personal counseling for students as assigned by the building principal. This may require meetings with parents, students, and/or staff outside the normal workday. May also be required to work before and/or after his or her contracted year. Requires other work beyond the work day as assigned by the building principal.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The counselor is responsible to his/her building principal and works directly with their Division Leader and Assistant Principals.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

1. The counselor has supervisory duties as assigned by the building principal.

2. Helps students with personal decision-making competencies and self-acceptance.

3. Interprets data to students, parents, teachers, administrators and other authorized persons.

4. Assists in identifying students with special abilities or needs.

5. Assists current and former students and parents with

educational/occupational planning.

6. Is responsible for maintenance of student records.

7. Assists in counseling students in the scheduling process.

8. Assists students and parents with referrals to other

specialists and outside agencies.

9. Assists student transfers from school to school and from

school to employment.

10. Assists with the assessment of the guidance program.

11. Prepares student group guidance programs as requested.

12. Works cooperatively with staff.

13. Performs other assignments as directed by the principal.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge:

a. Of elementary, secondary, and post secondary instructional programs.

b. Of guidance and counseling techniques and methods.

2. Skills:

a. Ability to work effectively with people.

b. Ability to work effectively with data.

c. Ability to organize and budget time.

3. Attitudes:

a. Willingness to adjust to conditions and situations.

b. Willingness to act as advocate for student, teacher,

administrator and parent.

4. Experience:

a. Secondary teaching experience desirable.

b. Counseling experience desirable.

c. In working with and meeting the needs of at-risk students.

5. Training:

a. Must hold an Oregon Personnel Services Certificate with a Counseling Endorsement, or equivalent.
