GENERAL STATEMENT OF AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The district nurse provides interrelated nursing and educational services.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The district registered nurse is responsible to the Supervisor of Student Services.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

The district nurse serves as a consultant to students, parents, teachers, and principals and does not supervise staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Serves as nurse consultant to students, parents, teachers, and principals in matters pertaining to health.

2. Serves as liaison between the school, ESD, student’s home, professional organizations, civic groups, and community agencies.

3. Assumes responsibility for health screening activities that are required by law and provides in-service training for staff and/or VIMS participating in the health screening process.

4. Provides appropriate follow-up of screening activities with necessary medical and dental referral, teacher-nurse conferences, health counseling, and home visitations.

5. Participates in planning and implementing appropriate policies and procedures for urgent health conditions of students who become ill or are injured while under the jurisdiction of the school.

6. Interprets health needs of students. Assists in developing plans for program modifications when necessary.

7. Serves as resource to teachers and provides instruction in health related areas, and may be asked to conduct inservice on bloodborne pathogens and/or other related health topics.

8. Responsible for training and supervision staff who are considered delegates of a nursing task, as determined by the nurse.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

1. Performs all such duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor of Student Services appropriate to training and experience.

1. Of the nursing process as defined in the Nurse Practice Act.

2. Of Nurse Delegation as defined in Division 47 of the Nurse

Practice Act.

3. Of health problems and needs prevalent in various age

groups.

4. Of community resources and/or agencies available to assist

with health problems.

5. Of current practices and policies, state and local,

including applicable laws, rules, regulations and procedures

related to school health (HIPPA, FERPA, ADA, and 504).

6. Of standard first aid techniques and limitations.

7. Of school rules and regulations.

8. Of school and district procedures for dealing with students, staff and others.

9. Of school district procedures for resolving conflicts.

10. Of and abidance by Teacher Standards and Practices Commission Standards for the Ethical Educator and Professional Practices.

Experience

1. Public health or school nursing experience preferred.

Training

1. Baccalaureate Degree in nursing required (will accept associates degree with 5 years’ nursing experience nursing).

2. Preparation in public health or school nursing preferred.
