George Wolff Forms $1 Million Fund at the Community Foundation

The Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin is the beneficiary of a $1 million gift from George Wolff, forming the George D. & Estelle B. Wolff Family Fund, a donor advised fund. Mrs. Wolff passed away on January 22, 2014.

“Charity begins at home, and Wausau has been our home,” said Mr. Wolff. “There are many things going on here in which we have been involved and supported, and many more may need some help over time. I’d like to do that for this community.” Mr. Wolff, who formed Mid-Wisconsin Beverage (Pepsi) in 1961 and a long-time community philanthropist known for his generosity and sense of humor, will participate fully in recommending grants from the fund over time.

Jenny Sweeney, president of the Community Foundation is grateful for the gift and what it means for the community. “The gift from Mr. Wolff is truly extraordinary. It fortifies the long term ability of the Community Foundation to carry out its mission of enhancing the communities we serve in Wausau and Marathon County. We are so excited for what this means for the future of the quality of life we enjoy here. We are grateful for Mr. and Mrs. Wolff’s leadership and generosity.”

Jean Tehan, executive director of the Community Foundation states that while we have had the privilege of working with many generous donors in our 27 year history who have contributed substantial amounts of dollars over time, this gift represents “the single largest one-time gift ever received to form a donor advised fund. It will provide for projects that enrich our local community, Mr. Wolff’s stated focus. We are deeply honored that the Wolff’s had the trust and confidence in us to administer this fund. The gift increases our capacity to realize our vision of creating a vibrant and livable community that serves as a magnet to attract and retain great people here. We look forward to working closely with Mr. Wolff in achieving his philanthropic goals.”

The Wolff’s son Bob, former president of the Community Foundation, stated “Our parents have loved Wausau and the great life they have had here. Our family is so proud of our parents for this leadership gift, showing they care about the community in which they successfully built their business, raised a family, and enjoyed a great quality of life. They have set a great example of giving back, and we as a family are fully supportive of this generous gift. Their children and grandchildren are very proud of the example they have shown. We are confident that the Community Foundation will be excellent stewards of this gift, and look forward to seeing great things accomplished in our local community in my parent’s name.“
