Prerequisites:

Medical Terminology and Anatomy for ICD-10 CodingPrerequisites: No prerequisites for the class, however some previous knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology will enhance the learning experience. Course Length and hours: The course will be taught beginning September 4th through November 6th (10 weeks) on Wednesday nights from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The total time for the class is 25 hours. Attendance and Certificate of CompletionWhile it is desirable that each participant attend all the class offerings, it is understood that there may be times when that is not possible. Participants may not miss more than one class in order to receive the certificate of completion and CEUs awarded. It will be the responsibility of the participant to make up any missed lecture and work. Every effort should be made to contact the instructor in advance of the class that will be missed using information at end of syllabus. Course DescriptionThe course will use a scaffolding approach to carefully sequence learning from simple to complex. Instruction will begin with an introduction to Greek and Latin word parts and rules for building terms and is designed around ICD – 10 terminology. Next, the participant will learn directional terminology, surface anatomy and terms that are used to describe anatomical structures and how anatomy applies to the medical record. This will lead to an easier grasp of pathological terms and procedural terms that diagnose and treat disorders and aid in assigning codes. This course can be used to prepare for a career in any non – clinical medical profession and is strongly recommended for anyone who is preparing for any AAPC certification examination as well as ICD – CM/PCS. Course ObjectivesThe participant will be able to discuss the human body and its systems, related pathological terms and diagnoses, and procedural terms and identify same within the medical record. The participant will be able to identify new medical terminology, identify new ways of using familiar terms and recognize synonyms for medical terms specifically required to understand and apply subsequent ICD – 10 coding instructions. The participant will be able to review the medical record and identify the correct root operation and apply this to proper coding. Teaching MethodsInformation will be provided in small logical segments (concepts, terms, illustrations, and abbreviations for the anatomy and physiology, pathology and procedures for a body system) followed by exercises that reinforce and assess understanding and retention. Common coding pitfalls will be identified and electronic health records provide within text will allow practice with newly learned terminologyThe following teaching methods will be used to ensure that participants are able to recognize, recall and apply the information covered: The instructor will use a variety of lecture and PowerPoint presentations that correlate with chapter objectives. Classroom activities will include listing key terms for each chapter, critical – thinking questions and completion and review of textbook activities and chapter reviews. Various assessment plans will be used to help measure knowledge and understanding of material covered in independent assignments and lectures.Handouts will be used to reinforce information, as quizzes to measure understanding, and as homework. Participants will have access to the Evolve website that provides entertaining interactive games and activities that have been designed to test specific areas of knowledge. Root operations will be reinforced using the Quizlet interactive website.
