|Course Description |

|This course provides the student with the building blocks of basic medical terminology. The basic structure of medical terms, |

|including prefixes, suffixes, and roots are presented. The meaning, spelling, and pronunciation of medical terms are stressed. Common|

|abbreviations are also included. Accurate pronunciation and spelling of word parts and complete terms will be emphasized throughout |

|the course. |

|Course Objectives |

|On completion of this course, students will be to do the following: |

|Define, pronounce, and spell common medical terms accurately. |

|Use a medical dictionary to locate definitions and obtain pronunciation guidelines. |

|Demonstrate the ability to build and dissect words by prefixes, suffixes, word roots and combining forms. |

|Demonstrate the appropriate use of medical terminology. |

|Write and interpret the meaning of common abbreviations. |

|Interpret medical terminology found in various medical records accurately. |

Course Topics

The focus of this course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge about health management terminology, definitions, classifications, functions and goals. The major topics covered by this course are: Overview of textbook, the basics of medical terminology and the main terms in health management and systems.

Class Format

The instructor is a facilitator to assist your learning. Participation is a critical part of the class. It is important to come to class prepared, having read and studied the material to be covered that day. Study groups can also be beneficial since much of the knowledge comes from memorization.

| |Students are expected to regularly attend all class sessions in which they are enrolled. Class |

| |participation and attendance are considered an indicator of responsible academic progress. |

| |Students who miss a session are responsible for making up the work and getting assignments in as|

| |scheduled. |

| |JUST policy requires the faculty member to assign ZERO grades (35) if a student misses 10% of |

| |the classes that are not excused. |

|Cheating |The commitment of the acts of cheating and deceit such as copying during examinations. altering |

| |examination for re-grade .and in any way representing the work of others as your own is |

| |dishonest and will not be tolerated .Standard JUST policy will be applied |
