Lesson Plan
Lesson: Medieval II Total War
Length: 50 Min
Age or Grade Level Intended: 10th grade world history
Academic Standard(s): World History 4.5
WH.4.5 Describe how technological improvements in agriculture, the growth of towns, the creation of guilds, and the development of banking during the Middle Ages, as well as the institutions of feudalism and the manorial system influenced European civilization. (Economics, Government, Sociology)
Performance Objective(s):
Given information on the battle of Hastings, each student will be given a 5 question multiple question quiz using PDA’s. Students must get 9 out of 10 questions correct.
• Assessment: Each student will be given a PDA in which they will answer a 5 question quiz that will automatically be graded and sent to the master PDA.
Questions will range from, Who won at the battle of Hastings? What was the name of the loosing king at the battle of Hastings? What Medieval system dealt with warfare? Ect…
To grade these students each PDA will automatically grade the quizzes as they have the answers in them. Students will then hand the teacher the PDA. The teacher will then transfer the student’s answers to the master PDA which will record automatically the student’s grades.
Advance Preparation by Teacher:
PDA usage training
Research what occurred in the battle of Hastings
Get the use of Medieval II Total War approved as a teaching tool (only rated T with very mild violence)
Procedure:
Introduction/Motivation:
As students file into class on the projector screen have the game up with a random battle that the teacher is playing. Continue playing for 5 minutes into the start of class, or until battle completion, whichever comes first. During the battle encourage students to tell the teacher moves to execute to try and win the battle. Also have the sound turned up so students can hear the Middle Age themed soundtrack in the game. Ask general questions to assess student’s prior knowledge about medieval warfare and ask questions about the music to get musical students interested. (Gardner: Logical/mathematical, Musical/Rhythmic)
Step-by-Step Plan:
1. Play the battle to get students interested.
2. Ask students to get out their notes.
3. Begin by lecturing about the battle of Hastings. Write my lecture notes on the board for students to follow. (I would need to have my lecture notes prepared.)
4. After giving the students a brief over view of the battle and how William won. Pull up Medieval II Total Wars historical battles feature and go into the battle of Hastings.
5. Show students visually where each side was located at, the formations they were in, and show the units each military was made up of at the battle.
6. During the presentation ask the students different questions.
What is so important about the Crossbow?
If the British were not worn out from their earlier battle, could they have won?
(Bloom: Comprehension)
7. Give the students the PDA’s
8. Using the 10 minutes remaining have the students complete the quiz.
Closure:
At the end of class each student will receive a photocopy of the Bayeux Tapestry to look over for the next class. They will then be told to look for another lesson about the spread of the Catholic Church using the game in the future.
Adaptations/Enrichment:
Boy with a Written Expression Learning Disability: Since there is no writing assignment this student will be fine.
Girl with ADHD-Hyperactive: Have her
Boy with Autism: No group work here so he will be fine
Boy with High Ability: Ask him instead of the quiz, to come up with a list of ways the English could have won the battle.
Self-Reflection: How are you going to evaluate yourself and your teaching?
I will evaluate myself by how the students react to the lesson. I will also look at the quiz scores and make sure they meet the objectives I have set for this lesson. If not I must then reevaluate the lesson and adjust for the next class. The advantage of the PDA’s is I will know instantly the results and if the students did poorly I can emphasize things for the next class.
