Welcome back to an unprecedented school year at Highland Oaks Elementary! Whether your decision is to attend school virtually or in-person, we are pleased to have you in the “Nest”. As always, I am truly thankful to be your leader. With your support, we can be successful TOGETHER!

As your school leader, in light of the current situation of our nation with Covid-19, the safety of the students and staff are my number one priority, in addition to your child’s social and academic development. All students, who have decided to return to campus, will be on campus with stringent health and safety protocols and will remain with their classroom community (cohort) throughout the school day. Movement around campus will be limited. Teachers will have specified times for outdoor classroom/instruction times and picnic lunches. Teachers, not students, will rotate into the classrooms. We will continue to follow many enhanced health and safety precautions including but not limited to:

1. Restricting visitor access to school building.

2. Floor decals and signage for social distancing guidelines.

3. Daily symptom screenings and temperature checks.

4. Face coverings for all adults and all students.

5. Adjustments to our LAMPS rotation schedule.

6. When possible, appropriate physical distancing in classroom seating.

7. Enhanced hand hygiene, sanitization and facility disinfection.

HES will follow all SCS and CDC guidelines and direction from the Shelby County Health Department in implementing our precautions. It is possible that over the course of the school year some of these protocols and restrictions could change. As a part of our procedures, ALL PARENTS (with the exception of Pre-K) ARE ASKED TO UTILIZE THE MAIN ENTRANCE AND TRANSPORTATION CIRCLE for both drop offs and pick-ups. Please be advised that all HES students and staff members temperatures will be checked prior to entering the building. The car rider line will be used to check each student’s temperature. Parents are asked to have all students to unload from the right side of the vehicle. Any student who has a temperature of 100.4 or above will not be allowed to enter the building. Those students, who traditionally walk to school, will be checked prior to entering the building as well. Those students who exhibit a temperature of 100.4 or above will be immediately quarantined in an isolation room. Once isolated, for the safety of all, parents have no more than 45 minutes to pick up students. Until further notice, parents will not be allowed to enter the building. Each student is limited to no more than three early checkouts unless appropriate special circumstance documentation has been submitted and approved.

Please be sure to teach your child to report to the front of the school each and every morning. It is equally important to note that, Morning duty for teachers begins at 8:00 A.M. Because we understand that students MUST BE SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES, students are not allowed to arrive at school or enter the school building before this time. I am asking you one parent to another, please do not leave your children unsupervised before the start of the school day.

As a part of our dismissal procedures, we use a staggered dismissal process. Beginning at 2:55 p.m., Pre-K will begin dismissing from the back entrance of the building. At 3:03 p.m., Bus riders will be dismissed from the back entrance of the building, as well as Daycare bus riders from the back entrance of the cafeteria.

These are the ONLY students who will use the back entrance during dismissal. ALL OTHER STUDENTS WILL BE DISMISSED FROM THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE SCHOOL.

Beginning at 3:05 p.m., Car rider dismissal begins. All parents will report to the TRANSPORTATION CIRCLE and students will be dismissed according to arrival time and CAR RIDER NUMBER. This number needs to be displayed prominently in your RIGHT FRONT WINDOW. To ensure that there is a steady stream of traffic, all parents are asked to exit right on to Annandale Rd. All walkers will be escorted out of the building at 3:15 p.m. Late pick –ups WILL NOT be tolerated. All students must be off campus by 3:30 p.m.

A new school year presents opportunities for exciting collaborations and amplified student success. We welcome all challenges that the new school year brings with enthusiasm and persistence. We have an outstanding faculty here at Highland Oaks Elementary and we are working diligently to achieve our common goal—to do what is best for OUR students.

HES staff will be on site, beginning Monday, July 27 between 9:00 a.m and 2:00 p.m, in order to answer questions about registration.

Let us make the 2020-2021 school year the best year ever!

Sincerely,

Marchera James

Principal
