Rev. Dr. Garry James

Dr. Garry James is a born-again Christian!  He is a native of Sumter and a 'son' of First Baptist Missionary Church where he was licensed to preach in April, 1995.  He is the son of William and Carol James, and the husband of Lisa Reid James.  They are the proud parents of two daughters, Niya and Erinn.

Dr. James is a graduate of Sumter High School's class of 1981.  He is a graduate of Winthrop University, where he received a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration in 1985.  When the Lord called him into ministry, he applied to and was accepted at Columbia International University's Biblical Seminary and Graduate School of Missions where he received a Master of Divinity degree in Christian Education in 2001.

In 2004 he applied and was accepted into the doctoral program at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC.  Dr. James completed his work in the Revival and Social Reform track and graduated from Gordon-Conwell in May 2007 with a Doctor of Ministry Degree.  During his time at Gordon-Conwell, Dr. James began writing his first book titled "Drying Silent Tears".  Having worked in children's services for over 20 years, he felt led to write a book and a workbook that would educate the faith community on the issue of child abuse and neglect from a biblical perspective.  He published his book in 2009 and has had numerous opportunities to preach, teach, and lead workshops nationally, educating the body of Christians on the perils of abuse, neglect, and answers to the problem by using God's holy word.

Most recently Dr. James volunteered to work on the Attorney General’s Human Trafficking Task Force.  He worked with others on the Prevention Education Committee to help develop presentations for the general public that will bring about awareness of the enormous problem of Sex Trafficking here in South Carolina.

To the core of his being, Dr. Garry James seeks social reform from a biblical perspective for our world.  After serving on the pastoral staff for two different congregations in Columbia for 15 years, he and his family now attend Word of God Church and Ministries where Bishop Eric Davis is the pastor.  He teaches in the Word of God Bible Institute where he provides instruction for students seeking theological and ministry degrees to expand the Kingdom of God.

Dr. James is also the co-founder and CEO Oikos Community Development where he and his business partner have provided various types of assistance to over 300 families throughout South Carolina since 2005.  He has led several mission trips to Cuba, Africa, and Alaska and has a heart for God's people and the human race.  At the end of the day, Dr. James wants to make sure that he has done all that God has created him to do on this side of heaven.
