These have all expanded my acting, dance, and singing skills, but most specifically my acting skills. The most exciting challenge for me was the contemporary play. We performed “Punk Rock” by Simon Stephens and exploring the character of “William” gave me such a meaningful insight into bullying, school shootings, and Mental Health. This is when I realised how much theatre an effect people’s lives, and I really appreciated the opportunity to . Coming into this course, I had very little experience in acting due to being from a musical theatre background, therefore I often struggled to create a character and was afraid to explore different ways of speaking/moving. However, exploring techniques by practitioners such as Stanislavsky, Chekhov and Artaud, I now feel comfortable exploring different and unusual roles, and have gained a greater understanding of the connection of the three disciplines. For example, when we were doing the play, I was often using centres of energy to influence character choices. I applied this to a dance solo I was performing in the showcase at the time and found it much easier to create a story and convey It to the audience. I’m excited to further these skills in the FMP by not being afraid to take risks during the rehearsal process and creating a strong, understandable character. Section 2: Overview of the Collaborative Project (Approx. 150 words)For this collaborative project we will be participating in both a musical theatre show (How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying) and a film project. For the M.T show, we will be working with the second years, mostly as part of the ensemble. This show is about a business and is very fast paced, so will be very challenging and involve a lot of rehearsals, both with our tutors and independent. We will perform 5 shows between the dates of June 12th-15th. For the film project, we will be working with both first and second-year film students. We will be acting, but also take part in the directing process and other technical aspects (e.g. Set design) For both of these projects, I have already identified numerous challenges. For example: We have a large amount of actors We have to schedule time for both projectsHaving to collaborate with new peopleSmall Budget Only given a 9-week timescaleDuring this project, I aim to not only have improved as an actor, but take on new challenges, such as helping direct and becoming more comfortable acting for screen, resulting in me being a much more versatile performer. Section 3: Your Proposed Contribution as a performer and other roles (approx 250 words)For this project, I will be involved in many different ways. My main role will be as a performer, which will involve independent rehearsal, research for the films and the musical and learning words and lyrics. I aim to be very self-motivated during this project by working at home and during any free time we have in college hours. Since we are doing two projects, I have to be able to manage my time effectively between the two. Therefore, I will make sure I’m putting an equal amount of effort into both the performances. However, since the film will come first, I will make sure I’m focusing on this in the first couple of weeks, so it can be completed in time. As well as being a performer, I will also be involved within many other aspects of the creation of these two shows, as the responsibilities. For example, I may be asked to help built any set design for the musical or help to paint it. For the film making process, we will collaborate with the film students in many different ways. We could help with directing, do some scripting and work with them to develop a strong character. This will be vital as this is something that is very important in the industry we all wish to go into and is a skill that I really want to have improved on by the end of this project. Finally, I aim to have gained experience in the process of film making. This is because I have had very little experience with filming and I want to understand the journey to the final product.Section 4: How I will record and evaluate my contribution and progress throughout the project (approx. 100 words)One of the most important parts of this process will be reflecting and evaluating on our progress, including what we have achieved, what we will work on and how we need to improve. Confucius once said “Learning without reflection is a waste. Reflection without learning is dangerous”. Therefore, I will not only say what I need to work on, but how I intend to do it. For my reflections, I will be posting weekly/daily blogs that will consist of pictures and videos from rehearsals (both group and independent), things I’m doing well, what I need to improve on and how I will improve on it in future rehearsals. At the end of the whole process I will write an evaluation and describe how I achieved what I set out to achieve, as well as saying what will be useful as I move onto the second year of the course.5. Proposed Research Plan and SourcesAnother vital ingredient in the process of creating a production is research. There are many things I can research such as :GenreImportance of an ensembleFemale representation in the workplace (As HTS is based of a business workplace)Acting for cameraDifference between film-acting and acting on stage. We will also come across many new research topics as we progress, like new characters, different styles of dance, lyrics that bring up specific themes and ideas.I will find my research from a wide range of sources. I will read books and articles based on topics we need to know more about, visit websites, and talk to other actors to get them to share any personal experiences with any of the styles/themes/ideas that are present in either the film or the musical. After all, an informed performer is an effective performer. Here are some possible research sources I could use:Men's 1950s Clothing History: Casual Fashion. 2019.
