Briefly describe the basic services/programs of the agency, client population served, and the size of your staff.

The AIOP team consists of the Clinician, the Psychiatrist, Dr. Heather Dlugosz, and two certified RN’s who job share, Rebecca Quinelle, RNC and Carol Carboneau, RNC. Our milieu consists of 6-8 teens, ages 13-18. We treat young people experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness. We provide group treatment, utilizing CBT and DBT techniques. Teens attend a therapeutic process group, and two psychoeducational groups daily. We also welcome teens with co-occurring substance abuse, TBI or trauma issues.

When (day and time) are agency staff and other important meetings held? Staff meetings occur at 9am, every other Monday and are mainly focused on interdepartmental issues. Clinical group supervision is offered every Monday at 9am, with an LCPC, CTRS. Clinical treatment team meetings are held from 12-1 on Tuesdays (interns are not required to attend any of the above meetings.)

What characteristics or qualities would be helpful for a student to have to best utilize the placement as a learning opportunity?

This is a fast paced setting. Interns work closely with the unit social worker as well as RN’s. They also work directly with the psychiatrist. Helpful qualities include the ability to work independently, take initiative and adapt to frequent changes in milieu. Experience in the mental health setting is helpful, but not required. Comfort working with teens is a must (but you don’t have to like them()
