Lesson Summaries:

1. Introduce how to play math game, Kakooma. Practice with addition Kakooma. Who is Greg Tang? Share books I have. Read Math-terpieces and solve the grouping problems in his rhymes. Students can use the computers to visit Greg Tang’s website to build number sense and practice their mental math skills with the game, “Break Apart”.

2. Read Math Appeal and The Best of Times to explore arrays, multiples, and the concept of multiplication and how it is related to repeated addition. Pose problems that students can use some of Tang’s strategies for proving multiplication with arrays and grouping. The online, interactive versions of the books can be used for students to reread, answer mathematical thinking questions, or use in small groups during Math Workshop.

3. Read The Grapes of Math and Math For All Seasons to practice problem-solving by working to solve the riddles in the book. Encourage students to try writing and solving mathematical riddles inspired by Greg Tang.

4. The games on Greg Tang’s website and the online, interactive books can be explored and made available.

Variation/Extensions:

Students can try out the multiplication version of Kakooma for more of a challenge, as well as encouraging them to write math riddles and use computation or problem-solving strategies inspired by Greg Tang.
