National Peer to Peer (NPtP) ROMA Training and Certification Project

Job Description

Position Title:

Mentor

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

General Description:

Mentors are active Nationally Certified ROMA Trainers (NCRTs) who have demonstrated their abilities in the delivery of the basic curriculum. Mentors volunteer their time to help move new Candidates through the training and certification process, with their time being evidence of the local support for the project.

Mentors provide local assistance to enable their states to increase the number and quality of available Certified Trainers, and to do so in the context of the states’ ROMA training activities. This stimulates creation of “ROMA Teams” in states where there had previously been little state-wide ROMA presence. Mentors have responsibility to assist a Candidate progress through the four phases of the training and certification process (see duties below).

Qualifications:

Mentors have the following qualifications:

o Are Nationally Certified ROMA Trainers

o Have conducted at least four Introduction to ROMA Trainings;

o Have attended In-service Continuing Education Programs (ICEP) at least every other year (note: if newly certified this qualification is waived);

o Have the time, ability and willingness to devote to assisting a candidate work through the training and certification process;

o Have a clear understanding of the key points of the ROMA curriculum and be able to help a candidate achieve a high level of familiarity with the content of the Introduction to ROMA curriculum;

o Have the ability to provide constructive evaluative comments to a candidate to enable him/her to hone presentation skills.

o Have knowledge and demonstrate acceptance of outcome management theory.

o Have knowledge of the issues of poverty and community action and community development agencies.

o Possess and demonstrate excellent oral and written communications skills

o Be proficient in the use of common office management computer software (word processing, spreadsheet).

Specific Duties (not all are applicable in all states):

1. Assist in the identification and recruitment of Candidates for NPtP project;

2. Develop a relationship with Candidate using a healthy balance of support and challenge as workers assimilate content material and practice presentation styles.

3. Provide feedback on Candidate’s questions about the material or about delivery.

4. Assist in navigation of the e-course, including discussing new or unfamiliar concepts and tools.

5. Assist in pre-Classroom preparation of sample modules, helping the Candidate practice delivery and understand the material to be delivered as well as prepare visual aides, if appropriate;

6. Attend the Classroom Session to assist in deepening the understanding of content, to recognize the key points of each module, and to work on ways to incorporate new tips for being a presenter;

7. After the Classroom session, the Mentor assists Candidate (with linkage with state office and association where appropriate) to establish locations for practice sessions;

8. Helps Candidate prepare for and deliver Practice Sessions (including where appropriate co-training);

9. Arrange with Candidate to travel to practice sessions with them (local events) as this is possible (support for travel costs may be provided by local agency, state Association, State office or other arrangements made for Mentor to participate in practice session)

10. Coach the Candidate, observe, and evaluate Candidate performance at Practice Sessions;

11. Makes a recommendation to the NPtP Project Director when the Candidate feels ready to schedule their Internship.

General Requirements:

1. Have a clear understanding of all of the materials related to the Introduction to ROMA curriculum (Participant Manual, Drucker Workbook, Trainer Manual, poster kit, logic model puzzles, e-course)

2. Work well under stress and carry out multiple assignments concurrently;

3. Work well independently and in a team environment;

4. Be a professional in representation of the Association of Nationally Certified ROMA Trainers (ANCRT);

5. Communicate clearly about timelines and meet assigned deadlines;

6. Accurately maintain records (observations and other information for self and participants) required for project/program management.
