High School seniors who will enter college next school year will find that most scholarship opportunities will come from colleges and universities in the form of merit-based and need-based scholarships. Seniors and their parents should review all financial aid and scholarship information for each prospective college or university at each institution’s web site and gather additional information during college visits. The Mount Tabor Scholarship Update will include a sampling of scholarship opportunities that are available from colleges and universities.

FORGIVABLE EDUCATION LOANS FOR SERVICE (FELS) provides funding for North Carolina students pursuing programs leading to careers in areas with critical need, such as nursing, teaching, allied health fields and medicine. The FELS application and program information for the 2014-15 academic year will be available in November 2013 at FELS. The priority deadline for submitting the FELS application is April 1, 3014.

Now is the time to join the Mount Tabor PTSA if you want to be eligible for the PTSA Academic, Arts and Athletic Scholarships. Students must be members of the PTSA to apply, and membership must be obtained by January 1, 2013. Nine scholarships will be awarded by the PTSA. Applications will be available in early spring with the scholarships awarded at the Senior Awards Program in May.

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION “MOST VALUABLE STUDENT” SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: High school seniors based on SCHOLARSHIP (50%), LEADERSHIP (40%), FINANCIAL NEED and QUALITY OF APPLICATION (10%); successful applicants are usually at or near the top 5% of the class and have SAT scores exceeding 1200 (CR & M) 1200 or similar ACT

Awards: Local, State, and National scholarships (500 four-year awards), ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 per year-six local scholarships (3 male and 3 female) will be awarded

Deadline: December 6, 2013 (Mr. Huck will deliver the applications on that day so plan to submit your application to Guidance by Wednesday, December 4th)

This organization expects and appreciates applications that are neatly completed and placed in a folder with all parts in order. Artifacts can be any form of documentation that supports your accomplishments.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE ELKS ASSOCIATION “NURSING” SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: High school seniors planning to major in Nursing based on SCHOLARSHIP (20%), active participation in STUDENT HEALTH CARE ACTIVIITIES (30%), and FINANCIAL NEED (50%); must plan to attend a North Carolina college or university, must be in top 25% of class

Awards: Three local scholarships of $1, 000 each for one year

Deadline: December 6, 2013 (Mr. Huck will deliver the applications on that day so plan to submit your application to Guidance by Wednesday, December 4th)

Foundation Scholarships: Following the directions precisely and submitting a very neat application will benefit students who are seeking the endorsement of the local Elks Lodge. You should plan to deliver your completed application to Mr. Huck the week before the deadline for review.

WINSTON-SALEM/FORSYTH COUNTY EMANCIPATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: High school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence (3.0 minimum GPA), character, and service; some applicants will be selected for a personal interview

Awards: Several $1,000 scholarships and other monetary awards

Deadline: November 22, 2013 (Mr. Huck will mail all completed applications that are turned in by November 18th)

CENTENNIAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM @ NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Strong students interested in the fields of engineering, business management, chemistry, polymer chemistry, forensics, medical fields, international studies, design, apparel, sourcing, fashion, merchandising, or retail management (TEXTILE-related degree programs); two MT students may be nominated, and additional students may self-nominate

Awards: Up to 10 scholarships each year, covering approximately 70% of the basic in-state cost of attendance ($47,500)

Deadline: Nominations by November 1, 2013-Submit senior profile/resume and Scholarship Nomination Request form to Mr. Huck by October 25, 2013

EMORY SCHOLARS PROGRAM @ EMORY UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Students who have outstanding records of academic achievement, who possess extra-ordinary personal qualities, and who have made significant contributions to their class, their school, and their community

Awards: Range from two-thirds tuition to full tuition, room, board, fees and extensive programs of educational enrichment (350 semifinalists admitted to Emory in January, approximately 70 will be interviewed in March –approximately 25 recipients will be selected)

Deadline: November 15, 2013-submit all required application materials (full instructions can be found via the “Questions” section of the Emory University supplemental “My College” page on the Common Application.

GOIZUETA SCHOLARS PROGRAM @ EMORY UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Students who possess superior academic credentials and interest in business, as evidenced by engagement in entrepreneurial activities, internships, business clubs, and other business oriented activities

Awards: two-thirds tuition to full tuition and fees with additional study abroad opportunities

NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION OF VETERANS AFFAIRS SCHOLARSHIPS

Criteria: Funds provide college support to help children of certain disabled, deceased, combat or POW/MIA veterans; students may be eligible for a scholarship if veteran parent was a resident of North Carolina when he or she entered military service

Awards: Several classes of scholarship eligibility

POINT FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Empowers promising LGBTQ students and leaders to achieve their full academic and leadership potential-despite the obstacles often put before them-to make a significant impact on society

THE NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY’S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Criteria: Provides scholarships to anyone with multiple sclerosis, or anyone who is the child of some with multiple sclerosis, who will be attending an accredited postsecondary school for the first time.

Awards: Range from $1,000 to $3,000, although a limited number may exceed this amount

BIG SUN SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria: High school seniors currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community

Criteria: A limited number of scholarships offered to incoming students based on merit and/or need; students are encouraged to apply for admission to NCSU early since they must be accepted to be invited to apply for a scholarship

NATIONAL BUCKEYE SCHOLARSHIP @ THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

Criteria: Non-Ohio residents that are admitted and required to pay the out-of-state costs; those considered rank in the top 40% of their graduating classes and have ACT composite scores of 28 or higher or combined SAT CR +M of 1260 or higher

Awards: $12,000 scholarships per year for four years

Criteria: An academic program and financial aid package for NC residents that seeks to cover 100% of students need through federal, state, university and private grants and scholarships; minimum combined SAT (CR+M) of 1000 or 21 ACT; completion FAFSA required

Awards: Full- or partial-tuition scholarships that are renewed each year if standards are met

Criteria: An array of scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen with GPA requirements ranging from 2.5 to 3.25, SAT scores (CR+M) ranging from 850-1100 and ACT scores ranging from 17 to 24

Awards: Scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $10,000
