Dear RJR Community,

Let us all congratulate and support new RJR Assistant Principal Mr. David Friedman! Mr. Friedman is filling the position vacated by Ms. Sandra Scales when she retired April 1. Mr. Friedman joined the RJR staff as a Social Studies teacher in the fall of 2006. He served as the Social Studies Department Chairman several years and was our 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year. He was one of the faculty representatives on the Principal Selection Committee that recommended Mr. Pat Olsen. Other past RJR involvement includes JV soccer coach, academic team coach and member of the School Improvement Team. Mr. Friedman received his BA from UNC-Chapel Hill, his teaching certification from Fayetteville State University and his Master’s in School Administration from Appalachian. We will miss Mr. Friedman in the RJR classroom, but welcome him to the RJR administrative team.

The RJR Key Club Follies entertained a full house last Friday. The Follies have been an annual tradition for many years and the money raised supports our Key Club and its philanthropies. Student performers impressed us with their talent and student emcees impressed us with their creativity. Mr. Olsen made his “rapper” debut. His performance was indeed impressive, but we suggest he keep his day job. Students in the audience impressed us with their show of appreciation, encouragement and support for every student on stage. Events like Key Club Follies and the recent musical production of Pippin warm our hearts with their demonstration of the talent, spirit and potential of our RJR student body.

If you missed these heartwarming opportunities or want to experience more, there are still plenty to choose from. Make plans to attend one of the upcoming performing arts performances or check out the sports calendar and attend a game, a match or a meet. Don’t forget the evening “Chat with Pat” and PTSA meeting on Monday, April 29 and the All-Sports Celebration on Monday, May 13. Both of these events start at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

We are proud to be R.J. Reynolds Demons!

William and Lisa Dull

PTSA Co-Presidents

On Monday, the Hospitality Committee stocked all four teacher workrooms with apples, bananas, bottled water, and baskets filled to overflowing with homemade trail mix—a sweet, salty, savory mixture of crunchy and chewy goodness. We’d like to recognize the Hospitality Committee and its Cooks-on-Call for once again treating our faculty and staff to such delicious and nutritious snacks. Thank you to: Monica Adams, Laura Angle, Margaret Bessette, Abigail Blake, Wendy Boling, Jennifer Briggs, Donna Carr, Maike Copeland, Laura Dean, Lisa Dull, Sue Evans, Jennifer Green, Lynn Gwyn, Monica Heyden, Kim Kearney, Karen Lordeman-Rowdy, Kim Macon, Elizabeth Morgan, Merritt Orr, Portia Propst, Lisa Rowell, Kate Ruley, Jean Anne Semke, Kathryn Spanos, Theodora Sparrow, Robin Welch, and Melissa Workman. Well done, and greatly appreciated!

RJR is fortunate to boast a beautiful auditorium, steeped in history but with state-of-the-art equipment and technology for sound and stage. Reynolds Auditorium is an asset to our Arts Magnet program, and our entire community benefits from use of the facility throughout the year, as well. Anyone who saw “Pippin” in March or experienced the Follies last week knows just how sensational RJR student productions can be in our gem of an auditorium!

There are quite a few folks who work hard to make the magic happen, and we’d like to give them a big round of applause for their year-long efforts. First, we want to recognize our resident behind-the-curtains wizard--Production Manager Ed Thomas, whose expertise and attention to detail keep things running smoothly during each event. Mr. Thomas orchestrates everything related to sound, lighting, and stage curtains; he also works with and trains two dedicated and energetic teams of student volunteers.

Whenever there’s a show, while Mr. Thomas is busy with backstage matters, he relies upon student volunteer ushers to be his “eyes and ears” for all the “front of house” operations. From the moment the outside doors are opened, as much as an hour before an event, the ushers are on duty. After each event, they comb the aisles, picking up trash, programs, cell phones, umbrellas, and any other items left behind. Mr. Thomas and the RJR community thank these volunteer ushers for their time and their indispensable help. Mr. Thomas notes that Max Booth, Danielle Bruce, Katie James, Lauren Miller, and Marcus Watson have been especially dependable in this role. Bravo!

At all school events held in the auditorium, Mr. Thomas also relies on a dynamic and skilled Tech Crew. There can be as many as 12 students working at a performance, some handling the musical shifting and flying scenery, others running sound, operating the light board and follow-spots, or stage managing the production We appreciate all the student Tech Crew volunteers, including Claudia Edwards, Sara and Katherine Laheen, Bruce Maddox, Courtney Serber, and Leah Wilkerson. Also, for three years, Katelyn McAleer has excelled in the role of Stage Manager—acting as the “traffic cop” who calls every change of lighting, sound, and scenery. She’s a senior, and Mr. Thomas says she’ll be hard to replace!

Thank you to Mr. Thomas and all the student volunteers whose behind-the-scenes efforts have enriched and entertained us throughout the year!

At the end of this newsletter, there is a letter that Pine Whispers adviser Steve Hanf has shared with Harry Corpening in the hopes of reaching out to the thousands of RJR alumni. Some 6,000 pages of school history can be found in the old Pine Whispers pages that – in many cases – are falling apart in the journalism office, and Hanf has taken steps toward digitizing the collection. The letter explains the project and solicits funds from interested alumni who would like to support it. Contact Hanf at smhanf@wsfcs.k12.nc.us with any questions or leads on local businesses that you feel may be interested in preserving this bit of RJR history.

RJR’s All-Sports Celebration will be held on May 13 at 6:00 p.m. in our auditorium. More information will be included in the newsletter in the upcoming weeks.

Students who self-nominated for the Spanish National Honor Society have been notified of their acceptance. Those who returned the national dues and contact information will receive email updates from the officers soon regarding the date of the scheduled induction.

It's hard to believe the 2012-2013 school year will soon be coming to a close.  As this year ends, we are already planning for our next great year and we need your help!!

We are currently filling positions for the 2013-2014 PTSA board and PTSA committees and would LOVE new volunteers for existing positions, as well as new opportunities.  Do you enjoy the arts, gardening, tutoring, throwing parties, giving tours or fundraising?  We have all of that and more!

Don't be shy!!  The PTSA needs volunteers with all different skill sets, backgrounds and abilities...there literally is something for everyone!!  PTSA is the perfect way to "get to know" other parents, teachers and administrators, and be "in the know" regarding all things RJR!

Please contact Lisa Carter at 725-6606 or lkcarter@triad. if you would like to get involved or know someone else you would like to nominate (including incoming freshman parents)!!

Mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 1st at 7:00 p.m. when Summit School's Inspiring Learning Series presents The Exploring Brain with Don Flow and Andy Chan.  Creativity and innovation take place at the intersection of nature and nurture, the individual and the community, spontaneity and discipline, imagination and problem solving, common sense and theory. They are both enabled and constrained by culture and ultimately when realized, transform culture. Don Flow, Chairman and CEO at Flow Companies, and Andy Chan, Wake Forest University’s Vice President for Personal and Career Development, will address how people and organizations can enable creativity and innovation to flourish.   For more information, contact Julie Smith at jsmith@.
