Flexibility with the Flex Term Rider MetLife Promise Whole Life offers a Flex Term Rider (FTR). This innovative solution makes it possible for your clients to benefit from the guarantees whole life offers at a more affordable premium.

What is the Flex Term Rider?

The FTR on MetLife Promise Whole Life is a term rider that allows the initial policy to be blended with term insurance. At issue, up to 50% of the original coverage can be term insurance. Since term generally has a lower premium than whole life, this rider allows for a lower initial premium for a specific face amount. The term portion of the policy is fully convertible to all currently available permanent products until age 651. The rider is fully commissionable.2

How does it work?

The term portion of the policy will be funded annually with non-guaranteed dividends and out-of-pocket premiums. The premium or dividends not needed to pay for the term cost will be used to buy paid-up additions. As the death benefit from paid-up additions increases, less term insurance is required to keep the total death benefit level. Over time, the paid-up additions may become large enough that term insurance is no longer necessary to keep a level face amount. At this time, no more term insurance is purchased and all future dividends will go to paid-up additions.

The values within the FTR depend on premiums, dividends and term costs and are not guaranteed.

However, the FTR comes with a guarantee to age 85. This means that even if dividends are never paid on the policy or if the term costs increase above what was originally projected, payment of the quoted premium will guarantee the total coverage until age 85. After age 85, if there is still a need for term insurance, additional premium may be required or there may be a reduction in coverage.

The FTR can help provide an affordable approach to MetLife Promise Whole Life. Oftentimes whole life is over looked because its premiums are initially higher than other products that do not offer similar cash values. The use of the FTR decreases the overall cost when compared to other products.
