All full-time faculty members are required to attend Dr. Tim Culver’s session (# 7) on Thursday, January 8 at 9:00 a.m. in C-209.

All Career/Technical program faculty members are required to attend Ms. Starr Herrman’s session Tuesday, January 13 at 1:00 p.m. in C-209.

A Critical Thinking Academy session will be offered daily on January 8, 9, 12, 13, and 14, 2009. The Critical Thinking Academy includes a series of panels and presentations. All faculty members are encouraged to attend these Academy sessions, which are offered by your colleagues. They are shown in red on this schedule. Topics include developing pilot courses, the CAT Test Results, Spring Semester 2008 Pilot Course Results, and Spring Semester 2009 Pilot Course Plans.

#2 1:00 – 4:00 Managing a D2L Course K-163

This hands-on session is designed for those who are new to D2L or those who want a refresher. It includes managing news, assignments, discussions, groups, and quizzes as well as releasing grades to students. This session does not address how to develop materials for an online course. Space is limited to 15. Leader is Linda Lyle.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7

#3 9:00 - 10:00 Organizing for Chaos W-94

By January 2009 we will have begun a major renovation project that will inconvenience everyone to some extent by the end of spring semester 2010. There will be some disruption of virtually all academic areas. The purpose of the inservice is to preview the renovations, the schedule, the disruptions, and outline the plan for dealing with them. Find out where your office is likely to be located during the next year or so! This is a repeat of Thursday, January 7. Ellen Weed will try to explain the muddle.

#4 10:00 – 11:00 E-Recruiting W-94

Nashville State has a new on-line job placement system for use by students, graduates, and alums. Faculty and staff will have access to view the site and to use all parts of the system to advise students and help them find jobs. At the inservice, Kim Wood will demonstrate E-recruiting for us.

#6 8:30 – 9:00 Respondus Lockdown Browser W-94

Do you want to add another level of security to your online testing? Come learn about the Respondus Lockdown Browser that locks down the testing environment within Desire2Learn. Students are locked into the assessment and are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications until a test is submitted. Linda Lyle will lead.

#7 9:00 – 10:00 Tim Culver Speaks on Advising and Retention C-209

Mr. Tim Culver will provide our Title III Kickoff Speech. He will emphasize the importance of advising and retention for student success. Mr. Culver is Vice President for Consulting Services at Noel-Levitz. He has worked with more than 50 colleges and universities to help strengthen their retention initiatives. Mr. Culver was formerly Director of Students Success at Shawnee State University. He has also taught developmental mathematics.

#8 1:00 – 2:00 Critical Thinking Academy I: A Critical Thinking Assessment Tool W-105

Faculty will share an assessment protocol recently developed to measure critical thinking. A design component crucial to the instrument is a way to use it not only post- assignment (assessing student work), but also as a formative tool for faculty designing assignments with specific outcomes in mind. Session participants will workshop the protocol using assignments and resulting student work form the fall term. Eli Nettles of our Math faculty and Janice Kinghorn of Miami University of Ohio will conduct this critical thinking workshop, based on work they’ve done together.

#9 1:00 – 2:00 Understanding Quiz Settings in D2L K-163

This is a demo and discussion session. The following questions as well as questions submitted by faculty will be addressed. Do student see quiz results? Do the grades go in the grade book automatically? How do you restrict a test to students who request extra time through ADA? How do you set questions as bonus or mandatory? Please email any questions you would like to include to Linda Lyle, leader of this session.

This is a hands-on session creating a simple grade book. We’ll discuss the settings that must be changed every semester, as well as how to control what you see as the instructor and what students see. Linda Lyle is leader.

#12 1:00 – 2:00 Calendar in D2L K-163

In this session we will create calendar entries using “Add Entry” and the checkbox in Quizzes, Assignments, Grades, and the grade book. Settings and calendar entry types must be carefully selected or your students may not see the entries. Come join us for a hands-on activity and discussion. Linda Lyle is the leader.

#13 1:00 – 2:00 Critical Thinking Academy II: Developing & Assessing Your Critical Thinking Pilot W-105

How do we make explicit the critical thinking inherent in our course content—and assess students’ critical thinking skills? What are we looking for as we pursue our QEP goals in the classroom? How do we use the CT Rubric? What does SACS require? Bring your ideas, activities and assignments, questions, and concerns. Following a short presentation by Michelle Adkerson, Michelle, Bridgette Weir, and Marla Perry will work with instructors hands-on as they complete their course Implementation Forms.

#14 9:00 – 10:00 Critical Thinking Academy III: CAT on Campus W-105

In Fall 2008, we gave our first 100 Critical-thinking Assessment Tests (CAT) from TTU, with our faculty members scoring the results. What did we learn about our incoming freshmen? How can we use the CAT as pre and post assessments in our QEP Pilots? A panel from the first Faculty Scoring Session will share their insights. The panel will be led by our trained scorers, Michelle Adkerson and Donna Whitehouse. They led the scoring session on our campus. The Library staff’s annual bean bash is an honored Nashville State tradition. Its roots go even deeper than those of our football team. More information about opportunities to participate will be made available by the Library staff, but you can begin planning that pot of beans that you will contribute.

Did the doctor laugh when you told him you needed the prescription that would allow you to read Calibri font without getting a headache? And, the annoying transparent popup tool “thingy” – what’s up with that? Come to Office 2007-101 for a few tips to make the transition to Office 2007 a little easier. This is a repeat of inservices Karen offered prior to fall semester. Limited to 15 participants, so prior sign-up is essential. Karen Kendrick of our Office Administration faculty will lead this session.

The Diversity Committee invites participants of this workshop to share in a light-hearted interactive activity designed to explore areas of diversity such as work methods, communication styles, and personal values. This session, facilitated by Aggie Mendoza and members of the Diversity Committee, features a short film that follows the interactions between a set of diverse coworkers and candid discussions of the scenarios. Given the many positive aspects of cultural diversity flourishing at NSCC, this workshop seeks to continue promoting diversity as an integral part of our organizational culture.

#20 1:00 – 2:00 Metro Schools Small Learning Communities Initiative C-209

Starr Herrman will discuss the status and plans for the establishment of Career Academies in all Metro Nashville Public High Schools. She will emphasize the opportunities for Nashville State to participate in this project. The Metro Schools project fits very well with our Perkins efforts. Ms. Herrman is Director of Smaller Learning Communities and Career Academies for Metro Nashville Public Schools. She has worked with Nashville State faculty and staff for many years on various innovative projects, including the Ford PAS program and the Glencliff High School Business Academy.

Does fear of copyright infringement keep you stuck within the confines of the Microsoft clipart bin? Come learn about the world of free image archives. This session will include a brief overview of Creative Commons licenses. Emily Bush, our Instructional Librarian, will guide us through the world of images that are safe to download!

The NSCC Librarians and the Dean give a shout out to their favorite databases, showing you the hidden treasures that can make research less painful to your students and yourself. Faculty members often say that they wish they had time to explore library resources. Well, here is the time for a guided tour.
