DRAFT GEOGRAPHICAL LIST OF SELECTED OUTDOOR AND PERMANENTLY DISPLAYED SELECTED INDOOR SCULPTURES BY

DANIEL CHESTER FRENCH

(version by Marcey Terrien, February 2002, edited by W. Styka, May 29, 2002)

(* denotes works executed at Chesterwood) [[needs more research]

Prefatory Remarks

□ Although the ultimate aim is to list by location all the works by Daniel Chester French that are in public collections, the present list of works that are outdoors or that are on permanent display indoors does not pretend to be exhaustive; hence the inclusion of the word selected.

□ The following works have been deliberately omitted: (1) sculptures in the Chesterwood collection whether in bronze, marble, or plaster

(2) outdoor pieces which are small and vulnerable, particularly those in smaller cemeteries

(3) those in museum collections unless they are on indefinite or virtually permanent exhibit

□ Several outdoor works are no longer in their original locations; their current locations only are noted on the present list. There is always the possibility that more works may have been moved without our knowledge.

□ The present geographical list is limited to the following information for each entry: state or country, city, title, medium, form, specific location, and inclusive dates. Not included are detailed locations; the clay date; one or more additional concise statements on, for example, size, original location, names of collaborators and architects, significance, subject, architectural context, and cross references; and reference to that which is in the Chesterwood collection that pertains to the entry (e.g., archival photographs, a plaster sketch, a bronze replica, etc.). Such a list will be comprehensive and will equip visitors with basic answers to basic questions. It will be entered on a computer program and will serve the museum as a master list as well as a working list for any future lists, be they alphabetical, chronological, or geographical.

□ The current list falls short of being a completely user-friendly geographical list. To be truly user friendly, the list needs to follow one of two formats: (1) a format with the specific location of the work placed before the title (i.e., state, town, specific location, and title, or titles at that specific location listed in immediate sequence) or (2) the current general format but with all titles that are in the same locations listed in respective immediate sequence. Either format would enable one to see at a glance what is in the same collection rather than having to jump up and down through the list, as is the case now. The State House in Boston, for example, has a few works by French.
