Cultural Experiences – Spanish III

Cultural Experiences – Spanish III

Rationale

1. To enhance and reinforce students’ knowledge of events and opportunities related to the Spanish language and the Spanish speaking world in the context of every day life.

2. To increase students’ understanding and appreciation of the cultures of Spanish speaking people so that students feel more comfortable interacting with native speakers.

Guidelines

1. Students must participate in 1 cultural experience per quarter. For each project, there are forms to be completed by students. (See designated box.) Each form has a rubric on back. Forms should be picked up before the project is completed to ensure that all criteria are met. Students have the opportunity to control 50 points of their quarter grade by meeting the given requirements.

2. All forms should be completed individually even if the experience is done with other students. Students need individual proof of participation (receipts, ticket stubs, etc.) Note: B-2 is to be done with your family, not other students.

3. Type the answers to the questions (found on the forms) on another paper; hand in the typed answers along with the original form. (Failure to do so = - 5 points) Write in complete sentences. Remember that this is worth 50 points. Do a good job!

4. Students may not do 2 activities from the same category during the course of the semester. The teacher will retain completed projects for future reference.

5. Projects must be completed on time for full credit to be awarded. (This means handed in at the beginning of class on the day the project’s due.) Projects that are late one day receive a 10% grade reduction. Projects that are late 2 or more days receive a 20% grade reduction. Since this is a long-term project, students that are absent on the day on which the projects are due must turn in completed forms immediately upon return to school. (Please be aware that receipt dates, etc. will be checked.) Due date for the quarter cultural projects will be as follows:

1st / 3rd quarter _________________________ (to be done in Spanish)

2nd / 4th quarter ________________________ (to be done in Spanish)

MASS MEDIA

A – 1 Read a recent article (last 6 mo.) in English about a topic involving an important theme in a Spanish speaking country. The article should be 1000 words: 145 lines, 7 words per line. Provide a copy of the article. Write a summary of the article in Spanish. Fill out form A-1.

A – 2 Read a recent article (last 6 mo.) from a Spanish speaking newspaper on the Internet or one you obtain (from travel , etc.). The article should relate to something of interest from a Spanish speaking country. It should be a minimum of 500 words. Provide a copy of the article to the teacher. Write a summary of the article, as you understand it with a minimum of 8 good sentences. Create a vocabulary list of 10 new useful words you learned from the article, with definitions in Spanish. (Ex: “el castillo” = el edificio donde vive el rey) Fill out form A-2.

A – 3 Magazines in Spanish: Do a study of a magazine in Spanish. How is it organized? What are the different sections of the magazine? What products are advertised? What are the feature articles about? Who is the magazine’s target audience? Read a short article (200 words) and summarize in your own words in Spanish. Fill out form A-3.

A – 4 Internet Activities: Research one of a variety of different topics on the Internet. Represent the information that you discover in an oral, artistic, or written form. Pre-approval is required. Fill out form A-5.

PARTICIPATION

B –1 Club Event: Join the Spanish or AFS club and actively participate in at least one after school activity. Some events will require signing up in advance. Fill out form B-1. Club Advisor’s signature will be required.

B – 2 Restaurant – Dine with an adult member of your family at an authentic Spanish/Mexican/Hispanic restaurant. (An authentic restaurant is a place where native speakers might dine if they wanted traditional food from their region. Often such restaurants are owned and run by families that are from a specific region. Note: Restaurants like Taco Bell, Beanie’s, Señor Luna’s, or Highland House are NOT to be considered authentic restaurants for this project.) You need to experience at least three things from the menu. Since the idea is to be exposed to new foods, ordering foods common to us such as nachos, tacos, french fries, and Pepsi is not acceptable for a cultural experience. Complete form B-2. A server must sign the form. Attach the receipt or a copy of it. Suggestions for authentic restaurants:

Azteca – 5th and National La Fuente – 5th and National

Acapulco – 6th and National Don Quijote – 2nd and National

Jalisco’s – Cedarburg and Milwaukee La Perla – 5th and National

Cielito Lindo – 2nd and National Botanas – 5th and National

Restaurante – en el Supermercado el Rey La Chimenea – Mequon Rd./Germantown

Check with your teacher if you wish to eat at another restaurant. Dining at a non-approved restaurant will result in a loss of points.
