Course Title: Intensive Reading Plus (Read 180 Next Generation)

Course Description: This is a core Reading/Language Arts Program designed for striving readers and English language learners reading below grade level. It prepares students for success on exit exams and moves them to graduation and a promising future! It is intended to increase students’ reading ability, fluency, literary analysis skills, writing, and vocabulary knowledge which utilize the Florida State Standards. This course provides personalized learning progression and explicit instruction designed to engage students in reading, writing, language, speaking, and listening.

o Student Dashboard

o Instructional Software

Required Material:

o Composition Book

o Black and/or dark blue ink pens and pencils

o Duo-tang Folder (*vinyl preferred)

o Notebook paper

o 3 different color highlighters

o Post it (sticky note pads)

o USB Flashdrive/Jumpdrive

Types of Assignments:

o Reading- novels, articles, essays

o Journals/Response logs- Reflections, Quick writes

o Group Projects- team building, cooperative learning, group presentations

o Practice tests, practice multiple-choice passages

o Reading Portfolios, Projects

o Technology aligned assignments & assessments

Reading Portfolio Assignment Goals:

Students are expected to read at least 3-4 accelerated reading books/novels each nine weeks (12-16 books for the entire school year) and take and pass the corresponding quiz on the Scholastics web page. **These quizzes can only be taken during school.**

Guidelines for Term Grading:

All student work will be assigned a letter grade according to the grade scale below. Quizzes, tests, and/or projects may be worth more than one grade, according to their length and/or complexity. Binders, reading logs, and journals will be graded periodically.

A: 90-100

B: 80-89

C: 70-79

D: 60-69

F: 59 or below

Attendance Policy:

It is important to attend class daily and participate in class discussions and activities. Please make sure you follow the district attendance policy in order to earn credit for the course.

Classroom Goals:

1. Students are expected to take responsibility for learning. 

2. Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared.

3. Students are expected to be respectful of yourself and others.

4. Students are expected to follow directions the first time given.

5. Students are expected to abstain from eating, drinking, chewing, and grooming.

6. Students are expected to refrain from using personal electronic devices (cell phones, iPods, mp3s.etc..) during class.

7. Students are expected to raise your hand and wait to recognize before speaking.

Tardy Policy:

You must be in class and seated before the bell rings. There will be consequences enforced for all tardiness: 1st Tardy = verbal warning, 2nd Tardy =warning+ parent contact, 3rd tardy = detention

Assignment/Make Up Policy:

• All assignments must be submitted at the time they are due, if not earlier. If an assignment is one day late, it may not earn a grade higher than a C. If an assignment is two days late, it may not earn a grade higher than a D.

• If there are extenuating circumstances preventing a student from submitting an assignment on time, the student must speak privately with the teacher to explain the circumstances surrounding the late assignment. (The teacher will discuss private issues with students on a one-to-one basis only).

• ***When a student shows proof of an excused absence from the attendance office, it is his/her responsibility to ask for make up work or missed assignments on the day he/she returns to class. *** As per district guidelines, the student will have as many days as he/she was absent to submit make up work. (For example, if a student was absent two days, he/she would have two days to turn in assignments). Student must take care of his/her make up work within 2 days of absence.

• If a student does not show proof of an excused absence from the attendance office, the student will not be able to complete make up work or turn in any work that was due on the day the student was absent. Make up work is available for students who have excused absences only. Students are soley responsible for requesting the make-up work from the teacher.

• If a student is going to be absent due to a school related function, it is the responsibility of that student to turn in any assignments before leaving for the function. Otherwise, the assignment may be considered late and receive penalties.

Student & Parent Portal: You and your parents should monitor your grades regularly by accessing the online grade book via the Dade County Public School Portal at . ***I strongly encourage students and parents to utilize this tool. ***

Additional Resources: Students will be utilizing the Scholastics 180 website for class assignments, home learning, and projects. Students are responsible for maintaining an organizer or planner to keep up with all assignments.
