2016 Seasonal Position
Position: Short-term State Worker located at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Gaylord Fisheries Office. This is a temporary, non-career, position.
Wage: State worker hourly pay rates are $9.41 for first-time workers or those with less than 400 hours of previous DNR experience; $10.09 with 400+ hours of DNR experience in 2015, and $10.75 with 400+ hours of DNR experience in each of 2014 and 2015.
Duration: Up to 13 weeks (520 hours) between May and September. The actual starting and ending dates are flexible.
Duties: Principal duties are to assist with field sampling for fisheries assessment surveys, including the collection of angler, fish, and habitat information. Candidate will also assist with fish rearing and stocking, equipment and facility maintenance, computer data entry, and data quality assurance/quality control. Candidate will learn field skills related to fish collections and use organizational, data management, and interpersonal skills. Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications: Applicants should be self-starting, highly-motivated individuals interested in performing fisheries-related fieldwork that often involves strenuous physical labor. Candidate must be able to lift heavy objects and work outdoors in all types of weather. Small boat handling and trailering skills are desired. Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries field experience, general knowledge of fish identification, and knowledge of Microsoft Office. Academic coursework, work experience, and other skills will also be considered. Must be 18 years old, possess a current Michigan driver’s license and have an excellent driving record. Work schedule will include various shifts and some weekends. Travel expenses will be provided for any out-of-area travel.
Employment with the DNR is subject to Civil Service rules and regulations of the State of Michigan. A variety of positions are classified as State Worker 4 positions, but duties vary widely by position. Additional information regarding the State Worker 4 classification can be found on the Michigan Department of Civil Service website at: .
