SURVIVAL GUIDE (THE FIRST FEW DAYS)
GETTING TO ANN ARBOR
( Clearing Customs and Immigration
• Customs and Immigration will ask you questions regarding your purpose of visit, your US address, your major, etc. Keep your answers simple and direct.
• You will be issued an I-94 (a small white card) while clearing customs. Keep it well! You need it to leave the USA.
( Transportation from Airport (DTW) to Ann Arbor
• Taxi: Book in advance from Singapore or flag on the spot at the airport.
• Have your dorm address ready.

MOVING INTO ANN ARBOR
( Move straight into your dorm/apartment
• Have your housing contract and passport ready at your dorm’s front desk.
• Remember to check and fill out your dorm room’s inventory sheet!
( Purchase immediate necessities
• Meijers, Linens-N-Things, Kroger, Target, Briarwood Mall, etc.
• For details on list of supermarkets/malls and directions (by car and bus), refer to “Incoming freshmen” tab on
( Making your Mcard
• Your Mcard combines many features including identification, library borrowing privileges, building access, meal plans and Entrée Plus, and ATM/debit card access all on one card.
• There are 2 Mcard offices that you can go to have your Mcard made (refer to map).

• Bring your passport with you.
( Photocopying your Documents
• You will probably need to photocopy certain important documents when you arrive, especially your immigration documents that are sealed before you arrive in the USA. You can go to the following places to have your photocopying done (Refer to map):
1. Libraries.
2. Michigan Union basement: UM Copy Center and UPS store.
3. Dollar Bill Copying
( Attend Orientation!
• Orientation begins on Friday, August 25, 2006 in the Michigan League.
• Orientation covers important issues:
1. Mandatory check-in with the university (as required by US immigration laws).
2. Health insurance
3. Registration for classes
( Setting up your bank account
• Bring some cash (~USD 400) for cab, food, bank account setup. Your account will take time to process, therefore you need some cash on hand.
• The 2 major banks on campus are TCF and Credit Union. The branches where you can set up your bank account are as follows (refer to map):

UM Credit Union
Michigan Union Basement and Pierpont Commons
• 3 forms of identifications are required (Mcard, passport, F-1 visa) and have both your permanent and current address on hand.
IN ANN ARBOR
( Getting Around
• To get between North and Central campus, take the Michigan blue bus. All blue bus services will stop at the C.C. Little bus stop on Central campus.
• To travel out of the campus area, you can travel for free on AATA buses (just show your Mcard). To obtain bus routes, a free bus guide can be obtained at the Michigan Union or online at
