Standard CTE Certification Checklist

(January 2019)

Completion of these steps are required for obtaining your Standard CTE Certificate.

Evidence of appropriate major, minor, license, registry, apprenticeship, or MOCAC ? completed in the appropriate CIP code field requested. This must match the work experience and is in addition to the nine (9) semester hours of Workforce Education Development (WFED) (formerly CTE) course work.

Work verification form(s) and resume ?If you do not have an active Annual Career Authorization at the time of recommendation for the Standard CTE Certificate, you will need to have 4,000 hours of documented work experience, related to the CTE subject, within the last ten years. A minimum of three of the following forms of documentation are required to be on record in the Office of Certification. W-2s, tax returns (required for self-employment) b. Job/position descriptions or have the work experience form completed c. Letters verifying work experience from employers or have the work experience form completed d. Statements from clients or suppliers (self-employment)

Background Check (newly certified teachers only) ? If we do not have a recent (within the last two years) background check on file for you, one will be required before we can recommend you for certification. We will accept a Michigan iChat for this requirement. You can request a Michigan iChat by visiting the following website:

Bachelor's degree ? must be awarded and WMU must have an official transcript on file. If you have a bachelor's degree from WMU, we will have this information on record. It does not need to be related to your occupational field.

Official Transcripts ? Official transcripts for all courses used to meet certification program requirements must be on file at WMU. Listed below are two options that may be used to send your official transcripts to the University. a. Mailed to: Office of Admissions; 1903 W Michigan Ave; Kalamazoo, MI 49008-5211 b. Secure electronic copies can be emailed to: graduate-transcripts@wmich.edu

MTTC scores ? the following official scores must be on file before taking courses a. If applying for both the Standard Certificate and the CTE Standard in one of the areas listed below, the corresponding MTTC subject exam is required. However, if you will be applying for a single CIP stand alone Standard CTE Certificate in one of the areas below, you are not required to complete the corresponding MTTC subject area exam. i. Business, Management, Marketing & Technology (#98) ii. Family and Consumer Science (#40) iii. Industrial Technology (#87) b. Completion of appropriate credit hours at WMU in Workforce Education Development (WFED) - Please contact the appropriate WFED faculty for direction on approved courses. a. If applying for the Standard CTE only, nine (9) credit hours in the Graduate Certificate Program: Professional Workforce Educator are required b. Candidates completing the WFED master's degree leading to the Standard CTE and the Standard certificates must complete the approved 27 credit hours. i. Admission to the master's degree program leading to the Standard CTE and the Standard certificates require a bachelor's degree comparable to the current Michigan secondary teachable major in marketing, business, family and consumer science, or industrial technology (as determined by appropriate FCS faculty)

Adult and Child CPR and Standard First Aid ? are required for certification but not graduation and must be taken at an approved agency (entirely online programs not accepted). There are two places where you can find approved courses: a. The WMU Human Performance and Health Education Department (HPHE). The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Approved First Aid and CPR Providers: documents/mde/Approved_First_Aid_and_CPR_Providers_397544_7.pdf

Apply via the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS) for your Standard CTE Certificate and Standard Teaching Certificate (if applicable) ? Set up your Michigan educator accounts and apply for certification in MOECS once the items listed above are complete. If you are eligible for both of these certificates, submit them together. a. Use the Michigan Department of Education guidance document, MOECS Login and Access, to create your Michigan educator accounts: documents/mde/Initial_MOECS_Instructions_515886_7.pdf b. Apply for your Certificate(s) in MOECS - Once you have set up your account in MOECS, you will see links to apply for an educator license. Choose the link that is appropriate for you and follow the steps to apply for your certificate.

Report convictions in MOECS: Report any conviction (felony and/or misdemeanor) or civil infraction (excluding speeding tickets), on all of your applications for certification (now and in the future). Provide the Judgment of Sentence (JOS), Register of Actions (ROA), or Case history for each offense to our office (this documentation should have been submitted to us before admission).

University review and recommendation - After you have applied, your application will be submitted to the institution that you identified in the application process via MOECS for review and approval. Please allow 5 to 7 business days for this process. Please know that if you have a conviction it will delay this process.

Pay for your certificate in MOECS after recommendation - The MDE Charges $160 for your Standard CTE certificate. If an application for both a Standard CTE and Standard Certificate are submitted together, there is only one $160 fee.

Print your certificate - Once the fee is paid, you will need to print your certificate(s) from MOECS and obtain notarization. The Standard CTE Certificate and the Standard Certificate are both valid for five (5) years.
