State Tax Withholding Forms

More than 40 states derive revenue through state income tax and require withholding from wages to collect it. Only Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax. Many of the states that tax an employee's income allow the use of the employee's federal W-4 to calculate state income tax withholding. However, others require that a withholding allowance certificate unique to that state be completed and submitted to the employer.

Due to the recent release of the 2020 federal W-4 form, some states are still determining whether they will accept the federal W-4 form or will require an additional form unique to their state. In addition, some states that require a state form are still developing the 2020 version of their form and have not released it yet. The following list of states with an income tax and the form they require is accurate as of 12/27/2019.
