Title: Symptom - “Sage MIP has encountered a problem and needs to close” message appears when application is launched

This article applies to: Sage MIP Fund Accounting, v9.0 and higher

Symptom

When launching any of the Sage MIP Fund Accounting applications (Accounting, Payroll, Administration”, you may receive the following message immediately after the splash screen appears.

Windows XP:

“Sage MIP has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience”.

Windows Vista will appear like this:

“Sage MIP Accounting Application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available”.

Windows Server 2003 may display a hanging splash screen or the following message:

Cause #1:

One of the two required files necessary for the communication initialization between MIP and the SQL instance are missing or the necessary backward compatibility components are missing. These two files are:

SQLDMO.DLL

SQLDMO.RLL

Cause #2:

The SQLDMO COM object is not properly registered.

Cause #3:

The SQL Server Backward compatibility component failed to install due to an older version of the Windows Installer.

Cause #4:

A pre-existing SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility installation exists that is a higher version than version being installed. The following message will display if a higher version exists.

Cause #5

MDAC library files are damaged or missing from the computer

Resolution #1:

Remove and reinstall the workstation via the UNC path of the MIP server. This process will deliver these files to the correct location.

Resolution #2:

Register SQLDMO with the operating system. For Windows XP, click on Start(Run. From the run line enter the following syntax and click the OK button:

Regsvr32 sqldmo.dll

For Windows Vista users, you will first need to access the command prompt as an administrator. To do this, click Start(All Programs(Accessories. Right-click on Command Prompt and select “Run as Administrator”.

Resolution #3:

1. Navigate to the MIP Share\Setup\SubInstalls folder.

2. Locate and execute the file SQLServer2005_BC.msi accepting all default values. If the PC does not have Windows Installer v3.1 installed a message will appear causing the installation to terminate and proceed to step three. Otherwise, allow the installation to complete and launch the workstation application.

3. Browse up one level to MIP Share\Setup and locate the file instmsi3.exe and execute. Allow the installation process to complete (You may be prompted to restart the PC) and repeat step two.

Resolution #4:

1. Navigate to Add/Remove Programs via the Windows Control Panel. Add/Remove Programs was renamed to Programs and Features with the release of Windows Vista and Server 2008.

2. Locate the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility item in the list of installed applications.

3. Select Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility and choose the ‘Change’ option.

4. Click the ‘Next’ at the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility installation wizard.

5. Choose the ‘Repair’ option and click ‘Next.

6. Select the ‘Install’ button to begin the repair process.

7. Allow the repair process to complete and click the ‘Finish’ button.

NOTE: If the repair process prompts for a location for original installation media, the installation package used to install the backward compatibility has been removed from the machine. To resolve this issue, browse to the installation location for this version, or uninstall the existing backward compatibility and install the backward compatibility package located in the MIP Share\Setup\SubInstalls directory as provided in resolution three.

Resolution #5

1. Locate installed MDAC components: Start>Run> Enter %CommonProgramFiles%>OK

2. Open>System>MDAC components

3. If “System Folder” is missing, Contact your local IT resource for additional assistance in correcting the path variable: Check to see if error is still there if so proceed to next step

4. Download and apply/reapply the latest Service Pack from Microsoft.
