The Freshkills Park project is working to transform the 2,200-acre Fresh Kills Landfill on the Arthur Kill waterfront of Staten Island into a new public park over the next 30 years. The City of New York has conducted a master planning process for Fresh Kills Landfill that resulted in an illustrative park plan, also known as the Draft Master Plan. While nearly forty-five percent of the site was used for landfill operations, the remainder of the site is composed of wetlands, open waterways, and unfilled lowland areas. New York’s new parkland at Fresh Kills will be one of the most ambitious public works projects in the world, combining state of the art ecological restoration techniques with extraordinary settings for recreation, public art, and environmental education programming.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

• Under general supervision with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, perform responsible work in the planning, coordination and evaluation of public outreach efforts for Freshkills Park.

• Organize, expand and publicize the year-round public tour program, including leading the tours, scheduling, managing RSVPs and confirmations, and tracking and reporting on the tour program.  Update tour content as conditions change and train Park Rangers for added tour capacity.  Requires working on Saturdays and occasional Sundays.

• Manage the monthly Freshkills Park Talks lectures series, including identifying potential speakers, setting up lecture locations, managing logistics and publicizing events. 

• Manage Freshkills Park events, including coordination for ribbon cuttings, major annual events and volunteer projects.

• Expand and develop the Freshkills Park education program by building on existing relationships with area schools, scheduling school presentations and tours, and developing classroom curricula.

• Build and maintain a network of community partners, educators, and local, regional and international constituents.

• Maintain the content of the Freshkills Park webpage and manage the Freshkills Park blog, Facebook page, newsletter and other forms of communication.

• Manage press relations and coordination with Arsenal Press office.  Respond to requests for information via phone or email.

• Manage logistics coordination for Freshkills Park team with Staten Island Borough Operations; manage Freshkills Park vehicles; 

• Provide administrative and organizational support to the Freshkills Park offices, including both Manhattan and Staten Island locations

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or

2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” above.

New York City residency required within 90 days of employment.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

1. Ability to work independently.

2. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

3. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop and InDesign.

4. College or Graduate work in planning or environmental programs.

5. Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

6. Valid New York State driver’s license.
