How to prepare and submit articles successfully to Nicotine & Tobacco ResearchAn editor once asked me ‘if I knew the best place to keep a secret?’ He answered his own question - ‘in the instructions to authors’.Before submitting your article to Nicotine & Tobacco Research it is important to read and follow the instructions to authors.Preparing a manuscript: Use Arial 10pt or Times New Roman 12pt fontUse double line spacing for the main textDo not include more than three heading levels:HEADING 1: Uppercase, large font, bold Heading 2: Lower case, standard size font, bold Heading 3: Lower case, standard size font, italicizedDo not include footnotesDo not add line numbers. Line numbers are added to the PDF file during file conversionDo not format the text in multiple columnsRemove any text headers or footers from your file before submissionAbbreviations should be used as sparingly as possible (aim to make your manuscript reader-friendly to those outside your field). They should be defined when first usedCheck that your manuscript doesn’t exceed the requirements for word count, number of tables and/or figuresManuscript structure:Title page. This should contain:Full title of the article. Keep it concise and avoid abbreviationsInclude the full names and institutional addresses for all authorsEach author's highest academic degree should follow his/her nameThe e-mail address of the corresponding author should also be includedAbstract. This section is for acknowledging individuals and institutions whose assistance and support the authors wish to mentionFormatting referencesReferences. The journal uses American Medical Association (AMA) style of referencing. References should be cited with numbers and then listed in numerical order at the end of the manuscript. The journal titles should be abbreviated and the DOI number included for any article that is accessible online. If no DOI is assigned to the content and you retrieved it online, include the URL and the date the article was last accessedFor references with more than six authors, provide the names of the first three authors and then add et alAdding the DOI numbers for all articles that are accessible online can be a contentious issue! But DOI numbers are useful, especially if you are reading the article online as you can click directly through to the article that way.OUP have contacted Technical Support at Thomson Reuters about getting the style for NTR updated on EndNote, and they have forwarded the matter to be corrected, however they don’t know exactly when it will be resolved.Preparing tables:Tables must be supplied in Word (.doc) format to enable editingEach table should be self-explanatory and include a brief descriptive title. Avoid abbreviating words in tables unless already defined in the abbreviations list. Abbreviations must be listed below the table if usedSupply landscape tables in a separate file. Tables should always be cited in text in consecutive numerical order.Preparing figures:For the review process, figures can be embedded in the main text if they are of sufficient quality, but separate files are preferred. For review, the high resolution images you upload will automatically be converted to PDF and HTML for reviewers to download. Please label and number your figures and figure legends clearlyThe typesetters can work with figures in the following formats: .TIF (Tagged Image Format File) .DOC (Microsoft Word document) .XLS (Microsoft Excel) .PPT (Microsoft PowerPoint) .PDF (Portable document format, Adobe) .AI (Adobe Illustrator) .WMF (Windows metafile) .PNG (Portable Network Graphics)Figure size. Authors have not followed the instructions to authors. The most common reasons why a manuscript is unsubmitted:The co-authors details have not been added to the online submission siteA title page has not been includedThe abstract is not structured correctly The references and/or in-text citations are formatted incorrectlyThe funding and declaration of Interests sections missingThe maximum word count has been exceeded. The maximum number of figures/tables has been exceeded Like most other reputable journals, N&TR finds itself in an increasingly competitive market with an increasing amount of submissions combined with a restricted page budget. To be fair to all it has become necessary for us to adhere quite strictly to our author submission guidelines. Original investigations should be less than 4000 words, and should not include more than four figures and tables combined Brief reports should be less than 2000 words and should include no more than 2 figures and tables combinedReviews should be less than 6000 words, and should not include more than four figures and tables combined** Multi-part figures count as separate figures **If your manuscripts exceed any of the above limits significantly, then please contact the Editor, prior to submission to request permission to exceed the limits Motivation to exceed the guideline limits should be provided, but will need to be very strong to succeed. If the request is approved, please indicate this is the cover letterAnd finally and short list of do’s and don’tsDoCheck that your manuscript fits the scope of the journal Read and follow the instructions to authorsFormat the manuscript correctlyPrepare a cover letter addressed to the Editor of N&TR. You would be surprised at how many cover letters we receive that are addressed to the Editor of another journal!Contact the editorial office if you are unsure about anything prior to submission or if you have any questions during the peer review processDon’t’Assume that your manuscript has been submitted successfully after you press the ‘submit’ button. If you do not receive an email from the editorial office confirming receipt within an hour or so, check your author centre. The manuscript is probably still and draft and you have not answered all of the submission questions. If not, contact the editorial officeBe impatient. The peer review can take several weeks (sometimes a few months) and it can sometimes be very difficult to find reviewers, particularly over holiday periods. But rest assured, we always do our very best to ensure a prompt review ................
