10+1ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE 4235SEQUOIAS CCDAcademic ServicesCREDIT BY EXAMINATION CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNINGIt is the policy of College of the Sequoias (COS), under Title 5, Section 55050, and the requirements established by the Board of Trustees to grant credit by examination. Credit for prior learning may be obtained by one of the following methods: Achievement of a satisfactory score on Standardized Exams such as Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), or Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT); Evaluation of Joint Service Transcripts (JST) or Military Service/Training; Achievement of a satisfactory score on an examination administered by other agencies approved by the District; Evaluation of industry recognized credential documentation; Evaluation of student-created portfolios; Satisfactory completion of an institutional examination, known as Credit by Examination, administered by the college in lieu of completion of an active course listed in the current college catalog.Credit by examination allows students to earn credit for a specific course that is listed in the College catalog by demonstrating they have achieved equivalent knowledge, understanding and experience elsewhere.Credit may be awarded for prior experience or prior learning only for individually identified courses with subject matter similar to that of the individual’s prior learning and only for a course listed in the college catalog. Award of credit may be made to electives for students who do not require additional general education or program credits to meet their educational goals. Credits acquired by assessment shall not be counted in determining the 12 semester hours of credit in residence required for the associates degree or the 50% of units required to be completed in residence for certificates. Upon completion of the Student Education Plan (SEP), pursuant to Education Code 78212, a student who is a veteran or an active-duty member of the armed forces, holds industry-recognized credentials, or requests credit for a course based on their prior learning shall be referred to the appropriate department faculty member for assessment of prior learning. Students may accept, decline, or appeal decisions related to award of credit, and in the cases of credit by exam, pursuant to Title 5 Sections 55021 and 55025. A separate Administrative Procedure, AP 4236, addresses Credit for Prior Learning for Standardized Exams such as Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), or Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT)A separate Administrative Procedure, AP 4237, addresses credit by examination for articulated high school courses.METHODS FOR AWARDING CREDITStandardized Exams such as AP, IB, CLEP, and DLPTSee Administrative Procedure 4236 Standardized Exams (Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT)Joint Service Transcripts (Military Service/Training)Students interested in Credit for Prior Learning based on their military service/training shall receive credit as recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE) Directory and approved by the appropriate discipline faculty of the college under the following circumstances: The student shall complete the External credit petition available by meeting with a Counselor. Official transcripts must be on file in Admissions & Records Office; these may include Joint Services Transcript (JST), Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART), Army and American Council on Education Registry Transcript Service (AARTS), Coast Guard Institute (CGI), DANTES/USAFI, DLIELC (Lackland) Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), verified copies of DD214 (member 2 or 4) or any approved transcripts issued by the Armed Forces of the United States. Credit course equivalency shall be determined by the faculty of the appropriate munity College of the Airforce, Air University, Air Force Institute of Technology, The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language (DLIFLC) and all other regionally accredited schools associated with the Armed services will be evaluated per the guidance outlined in the catalog on Acceptance of Credit from other Institutions.Veterans with an approved DD-214 or military transcript showing completion of basic training are exempt from the two units of Physical Activity courses and three units of Health and Wellness Subject Requirement for the Associate Degree. Students completing the CSU GE Pattern will be awarded area E Credit pursuant to CSU Executive Order 1036.Examination Administered by Other Agencies Approved By the DistrictStudents interested in Credit for Prior Learning using exams administered outside of the District may be awarded credit, as determined by the faculty in the discipline who normally teach the course for which credit is to be granted in accordance with policies and procedures approved by the curriculum committee. The student will meet with the appropriate department chair or faculty designee to receive further instructions.Industry Recognized CredentialsStudents interested in Credit for Prior Learning using industry recognized credential(s) may receive credit as recommended by the appropriate department chair or faculty designee. The student will meet with the appropriate department chair or faculty designee to receive further instructions.Student-Created Portfolio AssessmentStudents interested in Credit for Prior Learning using a student-created portfolio may receive credit as recommended by the appropriate department chair or faculty designee. The student will meet with the appropriate department chair or faculty designee to receive further instructions.Credit by Examination Conditions and Requirements:1. Students must be currently registered and in good standing at COS and have a student educational plan on file. The student may not be currently enrolled in the course they are he/she is applying for credit by examination. Good standing is defined as not on probationary status. The student must have completed 12 units at COS prior to applying for credit by examination. Credits acquired by examination are not applicable to meeting of such unit load requirements as Selective Service deferment, Veteran’s or Social Security benefits. 2. Students must file a petition for credit by examination to challenge a course with the Admissions and Records Office. Petitions are available from the Admissions and Records Coordinator.3. Credit by examination will not be allowed if the student has received college credit for the course they are petitioning for credit by examination. Credit by exam will not be allowed for a course (i.e., Spanish 2) if the student has already completed or is currently enrolled in a more advanced course (i.e., Spanish 3) based on prerequisite sequencing.4. Students must furnish strong proof to the satisfaction of the instructor, division chair, and the area dean that previous background experience or training would ensure a reasonable measure of success in the challenge. The examination cannot begin until the petition is approved. Notice of approval will be sent by mail to the student.5. If the petition is approved, the paper(s), project(s) and examination or series of tests will be administered by the appropriate instructor as designated by the Dean. 6. The course, with units and letter grade assigned, shall be clearly annotated to reflect that credit was earned by examination and will be reflected in the student’s cumulative grade point average. In no case will credit be awarded for more than one course in a sequence of courses. A maximum of 12 units may be earned through credit by examination. This limitation is waived in the case of nursing courses.7. Once the student receives approval for credit by examination, the examination must be completed within the same semester unless extenuating circumstances are shown to justify an extension of time. In the event the examination is not completed within the semester approval was obtained, an NP grade will be assigned. If an NP grade is assigned, the student will not be allowed to challenge the same course again.8. When the examination, paper(s) or project(s) is completed, the instructor will submit a letter grade (A-D, NP) commensurate with the quality of work submitted. Fees must be paid after the petition has been approved and before the examination is administered. Grading shall be according to the regular grading system approved by the governing board pursuant to section 55023, except that students shall be offered a "pass-no pass" option if that option is ordinarily available for the course.9. A nonrefundable processing fee of $15 will be assessed for each credit by examination petition in addition to the appropriate enrollment, and/or nonresident fees charged for each semester unit to be challenged.10. The deadline to complete the petition process is as follows: Fall SemesterFirst Monday in OctoberSpring SemesterFirst Monday in MarchLimitationsA maximum of 30 units may be granted in total from one or more of the Credit for Prior Learning methods: Standardized Exams (AP, CLEP, IB, DLPT), Military training, Examination administered by other agencies approved by the District, Evaluation of industry recognized credential documentation, Evaluation of student-created portfolios, and Credit by Examination and may be applied to the Associate Degree/Certificate. Students must be aware that other institutions, particularly four-year colleges/universities, may evaluate Credit for Prior Learning credits differently.
