This workshop is offered to new job seekers who are looking for assistance with their employment search. You will learn about the Workforce Development Center programs and services and what programs may best serve your needs (60 minutes).

Career Pathways & Training Programs--(Up-coming) This workshop will provide general information about current Career Pathway Programs and Training opportunities offered to Alexandria residents via the WDC. Career Pathways are an integrated collection of programs and services intended to develop students' core academic, technical and employability skills; provide them with continuous education, and training and place them in high-demand, high-opportunity jobs (90 minutes).

Information Technology (IT) Scholarship Information Sessions

The Alexandria Workforce Development Center (WDC) is offering funding to individuals interested in Information Technology and Information Security training programs that lead to in-demand certification. For more information and a comprehensive walkthrough of the application process, join an information session every Wednesday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Federal Hiring Process Have you ever wondered what happens to your federal application once you submit it? Well, once you submit your job application to a government agency, you have kicked off a process that is largely out of your control and almost always invisible to you as an outsider. This workshop will provide valuable information and will identify terminology that will help you to understand how the federal hiring process works. (240 minutes)

Introduction to Microsoft (MS) Excel _

Four-3 hour Sessions

This course teaches Microsoft Excel basics. Excel is a spreadsheet program that helps you manage mathematical information. It is frequently used in today's workplace. Once you begin to understand the basics, you will find it is an easy and fun application to use. For example, you can use Excel to budget your personal finances and keep track of your investments. You can also use Excel to follow loan repayments, compare different mortgages, and create invoices and more. Prior experience with the computer and an understanding of the Windows operating system is recommended.

Course Outline:

Section I: What is a spreadsheet? Section II: Entering Data and Printing Section III: Creating a Spreadsheet Section IV: Learning about Charts and Graphs Section V: Using Excel for Financial Planning Section VI: Working with Templates Prerequisite: All sections must be taken in the order as listed above. Participants must have completed Mouse & Keyboard Skills Training , Basic Computer & MS Word Workshops.

In this course you will learn valuable word processing skills such as creating, saving and retrieving documents; inserting and deleting text; formatting text, and using cut, copy and paste feature. Before you take this course, you should have some experience with using a computer and the Windows operating system. Workshop outline:

Section III: Managing Files

This course teaches you not just what a resume should look like, but what it should say. It walks you step-by-step through the creation of the most common sections found on resumes in today's job market. (120 minutes)

Ace the Interview

This workshop offers information on current interviewing processes and practices. Participants will learn how to answer the most common and important interview questions through interactive, hands-on exercises (90 minutes).

How to Create a LinkedIn Account (Up-coming)

This workshop will teach you how to create a LinkedIn account and give you tips on how to expand your job search through social media. Please bring a copy of your resume via email or on a flash drive (90 minutes).

Job Search

Finding a good position can be challenging. In this workshop, you will learn search strategies that will enable you to find job openings via the Internet, networking and professional associations (90 minutes).

Soft Skills For Work

What keeps people from getting where they want to go at work? It is not a lack of technical skills that holds them back, but rather a need to develop social, communication, and personal qualities or what we call "soft skills". This workshop cover four categories : personal qualities, communication skills, teamwork skills and problem solving skills. (90 minutes)

Employment Strategies for the Experienced Worker 50+ Session

Employers value the talents that mature workers bring to The Experienced Worker 50+ Program provides information to experienced workers aged 50+ about employment resources, access to the Career Center, career readiness workshops, and events. Connect with employers and job opportunities that promote re-entry to the workforce and allow you to utilize enhanced job skills" . (60 minutes)
