Advanced Word Processing Vocabulary
Address Book — Part of a user’s E-mail account that allows storage of E-mail addresses.
Attachment — A file that is attached and sent with an E-mail message.
Block Style — A letter style that includes date, closing, and signature block typed at the left margin (no indentions or tabs).
Data Source — A database that lists the specific recipient information.
Desktop Publishing — A program used to create professional publications.
E-mail — Means of communicating electronically via the Internet.
Graphics — Images that enhance a document or publication.
Horizontally Centered — Equal white space on left and right margins.
Letter — A type of correspondence sent from one business to another.
Mailing labels - Address labels that are attached to an envelope. Many software packages have the ability to create mailing labels as part of the mail merge process.
Mail merge — process that combines a word processing document with a data source.
Main document — Contains special mail merge fields that act as placeholders for the recipient’s name and address.
Memorandum — A type of correspondence sent within a business. Margins: Top = 2”, Sides = 1”, and Bottom = 1”
Mixed Punctuation — A colon after the salutation and a comma after the complimentary close.
Modified Block Style — A letter style that includes date, closing, and signature block keyed at the center point.
One-page flyer — A document that informs the public about local happenings or events taking place.
Open Punctuation — No punctuation after salutation or closing.
Reference Initials — Initials of the typist.
Vertically Centered — Equal white space on the top and bottom margins.

Directions: Create a one-page flyer for the following situation.
SouthPoint Mall in Durham, NC, has hired you to create a one-page flyer that will promote their annual customer appreciation day. This flyer will be copied and posted all over the county of Durham.
In order to create a publication that SouthPoint Mall desires, you must include the following items:
▪ Specific Event – Annual Customer Appreciation Day
▪ Location – SouthPoint Mall, Durham, NC
▪ Date – Use the date for this upcoming Saturday.
▪ Time – 9:00am to 9:00pm.
Be sure to enhance your one-page flyer by adding:
▪ Graphics
▪ Word Art
▪ Color
▪ White Space
▪ Page Border
Save the document. Be sure to proofread and check spelling and spacing before emailing to your instructor per instructions in D402-07.

Creating a Memorandum
Directions:
1. Key the following standard memorandum.
2. Use side and bottom margins of 1”. Set the top margin to 2”.
3. Use the default tab settings for the spacing between the heading terms and the information. Example: Key the word TO: (then press TAB; in some alignment you may need to press the TAB key twice)
4. Bullet the listed items.
5. Save the file as Memo1.
6. E-Mail the memo to your instructor.

1. Key the following letter using block style and open punctuation.
2. Use 1” side and bottom margins.
3. Begin the date 2” from the top of the page.
4. Use the auto number feature for the paragraph that includes the listed items.
5. Proof, Spell Check, Save.
6. Send the letter to the teacher as an attachment in an E-mail.
