WORK EXPERIENCE

|Records Scanner – McMaster Family Practice (Hamilton, Ontario) |2008 - 2009 |

• Prepared patient medical records for scanning. Scanned in the patient records and uploaded the scanned digital files to the network server.

• Other duties included retrieving patient charts, photocopying, filing, and bulk mailing.

|GIS Technician – Hunter and Associates (Mississauga, Ontario) |2005 – 2006 |

• Digitized the catchment areas of sewer networks in Ottawa using AutoCAD Map 2005. Determined the sewer network attributes by consulting the city’s online orthophoto maps, using Autodesk MapGuide.

• Scanned in a series of hydrographic field sheets. Inserted the scans into an AutoCAD file. Manipulated the scans by shifting, rotating, and cropping, to align with digital orthophotos.

• Digitized floodline contour maps using AutoCAD. Entered attribute data for each contour. Exported the data to MS Excel to create spreadsheets, showing the areas of flooded land.

• Added new property parcels to digital map of Pembroke, based on survey plan information. Updated the attribute database using MS Access.

|Cartographer – Rand McNally Canada (Markham, Ontario) |1998 – 2002 |

• Created colour maps using Macromedia Freehand software on Macintosh and IBM computers. Products included maps of cities, regions, and provinces, published individually and in atlases.

• Scanned in reference maps and placed the scanned images in Freehand files. Digitally traced linear features on-screen using the scans as a guide. Added symbols and text for streets, water features, institutions, parks, and points of interest.

• Performed Updates and Quality Control checks of existing maps by consulting city plans, zoning plans, recreation maps, topographic maps, the Internet, and other sources.

|Cartographer – MapArt (Etobicoke, Ontario) |1995 – 1997 |

• Created colour maps for publishing using Macromedia Freehand on Macintosh computers. Products included city, regional, and provincial maps.

• Scanned existing maps into Adobe Photoshop and imported the scanned images into Freehand files. Digitized linework, symbols, and text on-screen, using the scans as a guide.

|GIS Technician – Geomatics International (Burlington, Ontario) |1994 – 1995 |

• Digitized a series of geological maps using the Arc/Info Geographic Information System. Learned many commands of the graphics editor, ArcEdit. Performed table-digitizing and editing.

• Acquired a working knowledge of the UNIX operating system and the vi text editor. Used the editor to write programs in the Arc Macro Language to automate certain tasks, increasing my productivity. Applied UNIX commands to managing files and directories.

|Cartographer / Draftsman – Bruce Trail Project (Georgetown, Ontario) |1992 – 1993 |

• Plotted property boundaries along the Bruce Trail on more than 100 sheets of the Ontario Basic Mapping (OBM) series. Consulted assessment plans to verify existing properties, make changes where required, and draft additional boundaries. Refined my manual ink drafting skills.

• Generated reference numbers using Corel Draw computer software. Exposed numbers onto film by photo-mechanical transfer. Labelled every property with a reference number. Processed many OBM sheets in the darkroom.

WORK EXPERIENCE (cont’d)

|Cartographer / Digital Workstation Operator – Marshall Macklin Monaghan (Thornhill, Ont.) |1989 – 1992 |

• Scribed additional linework on large-scale topographic maps and engineering plans. Added text using mechanical lettering templates. Learned splicing techniques to join scribecoats together and insert text. Operated a flat-bed plotter to produce hardcopy output from digital files.

• Learned basic commands of the VMS operating system on the company’s VAX computer. Also learned CARIS (Computer-Assisted Resource Information System) and graphics editor CARED to make additions, deletions, and other changes to graphics files.

• Projects included Ontario Basic Mapping series, flood plain mapping, and municipal mapping.

EDUCATION

|Geographic Information Systems Certificate (Honours) – Mohawk College (Hamilton, Ont.) |2003 – 2004 |

• This on-line program featured the most up-to-date software and technology in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Courses included Introduction to GIS, ArcView, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Internet Mapping, Remote Sensing, Designing and Managing a GIS, and MS Access. Elective courses included Web Page Design.

• Program software included ArcGIS (version 8) to create maps and analyze spatial data, IDRISI Kilimanjaro to analyze and manipulate remote sensing images, MS Access 2002 to create and modify databases, MS PowerPoint to design presentations, Structured Query Language (SQL), and Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) to create web pages.

• Other software included Windows 2000, MS Word 2002, Internet Explorer, Netscape, and e-mail to submit assignments.

|Cartographic Technology Diploma – Sir Sandford Fleming College (Lindsay, Ontario) |1986 – 1989 |

• This program provided both the theoretical foundations and the practical applications of cartography, using conventional and computer technologies. Courses included map production, graphic design, computer programming, surveying, photogrammetry, and remote sensing.

• Responsible for all stages of map production: design, flowcharting, layout, scribing, peeling, type stick-up, and proofing. Produced general-purpose and thematic maps, medium and small scale.

• Achieved proficiency in computer programming using Pascal and FORTRAN languages. Learned many computer graphics systems: Resource Analysis and Mapping System, Intergraph Microstation, Dipix ARIES III, and Apple Macintosh.

|Bachelor of Arts in Geography – McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario) |1983 – 1986 |

• Program courses focused on urbanization, settlement patterns, urban planning, demography, statistics, and geographical analysis of selected regions. Other courses included psychology, economics, political science, English, French, and mathematics.

• Developed ability to analyze and interpret abstract concepts. Research papers involved reading, organizing, and summarizing large amounts of material. Communicated ideas in concise essays.
