I. 6th Grade: Students will study concepts of geography including urbanization, economics, migration, consumption, and globalization.

II. 7th Grade: Students will study ancient cultures and civilizations including Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greece, and Rome. Instruction will focus on building critical thinking skills to "think like a historian."

III. 8th Grade: Students will study American history from the American Revolution through the Progressive era. Instruction and assessment will focus on preparing students for the work load and expectations of high school.

Grading Policy: weights and categories I. 6-7th Grades a. Formative assessments: 30% b. Summative assessments: 70% II. 8th Grade a. Formative assessments: 20% b. Summative assessments: 80%

Discipline and Behavior Policy I. Students are expected to: a. Actively participate and listen throughout the lesson b. Respect everyone in the classroom c. Raise their hand to participate d. Be prepared for class e. Arrive to class and take their seat on time f. Follow the school honor code g. Phones should be put away and powered off II. Failure to meet these expectations will result in the following consequences: 1. Verbal warning 2. Student-teacher meeting outside of class 3. After-school detention 4. Parent phone call or meeting 5. Administrative referral

Retake Policy I. All students will be given the opportunity to retake summative tests and quizzes in social studies. To earn a retake, a student must complete a review/relearning assignment and show proof of studying. Students who score a D or U will automatically be given the review assignment, and students who score higher need to request the assignment at the time their test is returned. For all students, it will be their responsibility to complete the review assignment, seek help if necessary, and turn in the assignment. Retakes will take place 3 days after they receive their test back. For example, if a student receives their test on Monday, he/she will have until Thursday to complete the assignment and retake the assessment on Thursday.

PAS (Period of Assigned Study)

I. PASes are given when students turn in incomplete homework or work of significantly insufficient quality.

II. Students are given warnings during the first week of school afterwards no warnings will be given.

III. When students receive a PAS, they will serve their PAS on the following day.

IV. PASes are served 3:00-3:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays

Detention I. Detentions are given for honor code infractions such as missed PASes, disrespectful behavior, or dress code violations. II. Students will receive 1 warning to correct their behavior before detentions or other consequences are given.

III. When students receive a detention, they will be sent to the office to call their parent or guardian to inform them of the detention, and they must serve their detention on the same day it was given.

IV. Detentions are served 3:00-3:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays

Absences I. Missed assignments will be posted for the student to pick up once they return to school. Students can also download and print the missed assignment(s) off my website. II. Students will be given same amount of days to complete the assignment as they number of days they were absent.

My Website I. I will post class assignments and homework on a weekly basis. II. Students are expected to check my website regularly to keep track of homework.

III. In the event students lose or forget their homework at school, they can download and print the assignment off my website.

Online Textbook I. Students will have access to an online version of their textbook which has audio, main ideas, vocabulary flashcards, and review activities. II. If students ever forget their textbook at school when they have homework, they should use the online textbook to complete the assignment.

Class Calendar

I. I have created a class Google calendar for each grade with the expected test and project due dates. II. The calendar will be shared with all students, but if parents or guardians want access as well, please include the

desired email on the attached form and return to school with the student.

*Note: The Class Calendar will only work with Gmail email addresses.
