Main ideas / changes over time:

Pre-Columbian Societies (Ch. 1)

As a result of European technology and demand for trade, in 1492 Columbus established contact with the Americas, which had developed widely spread and diverse societies after Asian migration during the Ice Age.

Spanish Conquest and Colonization (Ch. 1)

As a result of disease, technology and a desire for wealth, the Spanish conquered much of the Americas in the 16th through 18th centuries, subjugating Natives and creating colonies of New Spain.

Early English Colonies (Ch. 2)

England’s southern colonies in North America were founded and grew in the 1600s due to cash crop agriculture, cheap labor and the conquest of Native American land.

Northern English Colonies (Ch. 3)

Mostly to escape religious discrimination, Puritans established New England colonies in northern America, causing an English immigration boom and the decimation of local Native Americans.

Middle English Colonies (Ch. 3)

After the settling and organization of the New England colonies, the middle colonies were secured by the English as outposts of diverse economies and backgrounds.

1600s Life in the Southern English Colonies (Ch. 4)

Tobacco cultivation and plantations grew in the South in the 1600s, leading to social hierarchy, increased reliance on slavery, and a new African-American culture.

1600s Life in the New England Colonies (Ch. 4)

Life in 1600s New England was centered on family, towns, Puritanism and a diversified economy, mostly resulting from geography.
