Pottstown High School Cosmetology Level III Syllabus

1. Course Number and Title: 8829 Cosmetology Level III

Course Description: The primary purpose of this Cosmetology Course is to train the student in the basic manipulative skills, safety judgments, proper work habits, and desirable attitudes necessary to obtain licensure and for competency in entry level position in cosmetology or a related career field.

2. Credit Hours: 3

3. Course Prerequisites: Cos level I & II

4. Course Times: Cosmetology level III – 8:16 – 11:11

5. Course Location: Cosmetology Suite room 112

6. Instructor: Ms. Diane Shoffstall

7. Required Text and Other Learning Resources: Milady’s Standard Textbook of Cosmetology; Milady’s Standard theory and practical workbook, study Guide, and Exam Review Book. Magazines, articles, Cosmetology related books, and online websites may be used to supplement all class objectives.

8. Course Overview/Expectations: The clock hour education is provided through a sequential set of steps that address specific tasks necessary for state board preparation, graduation, and entry-level job skills. Salon equipment, implements, and products are comparable to those used in the beauty salon industry. Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative, and productive career oriented activities. The course is presented through comprehensive lesson plans that reflect effective educational standards. Subjects are presented by means of lecture, demonstration and student participation. Audiovisual aids, guest speakers, field trips, projects, activities, and other learning methods are used in the course

8. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:

Perform basic manipulative skills in the areas of hairstyling, hair shaping, hair coloring, texture services, scalp and hair conditioning, skin and makeup, manicures, pedicures, and nail extensions. Perform the basic analytical skills to create a salon business, determine proper makeup, hairstyles and color application and texture services for the clients overall image.

9. Grading Policy and Rubric: All student work is graded on a total point value:

Technical Skills 70%

Employability Skills 20%

Homework/Practice 10%

All Work is recorded in the new Teacher Access Center.

10. Grading Scale

A = 93 – 100

B = 85 – 92

C = 77 – 84

D = 70 – 76

F = 0 – 69

11. Course Policies:

a. Student must wear a uniform everyday to receive credit for the day.

b. Students are expected to complete and hand in work on time.

c. Students are expected to participate in field trip activities.

d. Students are responsible to perform a daily duty.

e. Students are expected to be respectful of all tools and equipments for their safety.

f. Students are required to follow all rules and regulations set by the State Board of Cosmetology.

g. Students are required to follow all PSD rules and regulations found in the student handbook.

12. Assessments:

a. Students will prepare to take the NOCTI theory and practical exam.

❖ November – NOCTI pre-test

❖ April/May – NOCTI – Practical and theory exam

b. November - January - students will design and build a salon.

a. Students will have quizzes on new material covered in class. They may or may not be announced

b. Students will be tested at the end of every major objective. Tests will be announced one week in advance.

c. Students will be given a practical grade upon performing mastery of the practical task. These include various skills in hairstyling, haircutting, braiding, wiggery, nail care, skin care, haircolor, and chemical texturizing.

d. There will be various projects and/or assignments to be completed to further knowledge of topics learned.

e. Students will participate in various field trips to perform nail and hair services.

13. Student Supplies:

Students must come to class with the following:

1. Adequate pencils or pens, notebook, and three- ring binder.

2. Uniform and rubber soled shoes or sandals. (NO flip flops!)

The above hour requirements must be met by the student in each category in order for the earned hours to be accepted by the Cosmetology State Licensing Board to sit for the licensure examination.
