Carly CoombsTechnology and AssessmentDr. ConeMarch 2016Problem:To measure endurance fitness in high school students who are on a track team.Refining the Problem:The students I will assess using the rating scale will be high schoolers in grades 9-12. So the age will range from about 14-18 years old both male and female. For the rating scale I will be giving a pretest to test the kid’s endurance fitness. Once I analyze their endurance I will then work with them over a six week period to help them improve. After the six week period I will then reassess them and give them a final exam. The components I have selected to evaluate the students endurance fitness are:3 Minute Step TestRunning Test for 1 Mile 40m Shuttle TestBalke Test- TreadmillVmax (Maximum Velocity) TestInstrumentation and Methodology:My grading scale will be a 1-5 scale, 1 needing a lot of improvement and 5 being the best.5- excellent, doesn’t need improvement4- great, needs a little improvement but not much3- good, needs to work on some things2- fair, endurance not so good, needs improvement1- poor, needs a lot of improvementScore3 Minute Step Test (heart rate)Running Test for 1 Mile40m Shuttle TestBalke Test- TreadmillVmax Test5 (excellent)Heart rate will be between 50-78Ran a mile in 6 minutesLast level completed was level 7Walk on an increasing slope for 14-15 minutesMaintained 7 mph for one minute4 (great)Heart rate will be between 79-90Ran a mile in 7-8 minutesLast level completed was level 6Walk on an increasing slope for 11-13 minutesMaintained 6 mph for one minute3 (good)Heart rate will be between 95-109Ran a mile in 8-9 minutesLast level completed was between level 5-4Walk on an increasing slope for 10-12 minutesMaintained 5 mph for one minute2 (fair)Heart rate will be between 111-119Ran a mile in 9-11 minutesLast level completed was between level 3-2Walk on an increasing slope for 7-9 minutesMaintained 4 mph for one minute1 (poor)Heart rate will be between 124-157Ran a mile in 12-15 minutesLast level completed was level 1Walk on an increasing slope for 1-6 minutes Maintained 3 mph for one minuteFor this assessment an administer would need to know the following:3 Minute Step Test- the equipment needed for this will be a 12 inch step, a metronome, a stopwatch, and a stethoscope. In time with the beat, students will step one foot up on the bench (1st beat) then step up with their second foot (2nd beat), step down with one foot (3rd beat), then down with the second foot (4th beat). Students will step up and down for a total of 3 minutes. Once they are down they will sit and the tester will count their heart rate with a stethoscope for one minute. This test assesses your fitness level based on how quickly your heart rate recovers after exercise. The fitter you are, the quicker your heart rate will return to normal after exercise.Running Test for 1 mile- needed for this test we will need a track, stopwatch, and a recording sheet. Students will run for 1 mile to test their endurance. They will have anywhere from 6-12 minutes to complete this.40m Shuttle Test- needed for this test will be a flat non slip surface, marker cones, stopwatch, and whistle. Cones are places on two lines 40 m apart and students will stand behind on of the lines facing other line, and will begin running when whistle blows. Students will start at level 1 and have 16 seconds to get to each cone, then level 2 at 14 seconds, level 3 at 12 seconds, level 4 at 10 seconds, level 5 at 9 seconds, level 6 at 8 seconds, and then level 7 at 7 seconds. Students will try and reach each line back and forth in the time given. The last level that is completed is their score.Balke Test- Treadmill- this test you will just need a treadmill. Students will walk at a constant speed while the slope is increased every 1-2 minutes. They will keep walking for about 9-15 or until they can no longer walk.Vmax (Maximum Velocity) Test- a treadmill will be needed for this test. Students will start running on a treadmill at a low speed of 3 mph and the speed will be increased every 1-3 minutes to about 7 mph until the student cannot run anymore and is exhausted. The final speed the athlete can maintain for at least one minute is their score.Analysis of Results:A passing grade will be a 3 or higher. A 5 will be an A, a 4 will be a B, a 3 will be a C, a 4 will be a D, and a 1 will be a F. If the students do not get a 3 or higher they will not be able to participate in the next few track meets until they retest and score higher. Students will have six weeks to improve and get a passing grade to participate in track meets. This assessment will be a formative evaluation because I will be giving feedback during the activities and showing where there needs to be improvement.Student Name:Date:Score:Endurance Assessment:The purpose of this assessment is to assess the endurance in high school track runners by a number of tests.
