OBJECTIVES:

A. Identify the principles of growth and development

B. Explain the major theories of growth and development, including Piaget, Erikson and Kohlberg

C. Describe the important aspects of growth and development for the infant, toddler, preschooler, school-age child and adolescent.

D. Recognize the influence of nature and nurture in the development of children.

E. Apply concepts of growth and development to the care of children and their families.

READINGS:

Ball, Jane W. and Bindler, Ruth C. (2006). Child health Nursing: Partnering with Children and families. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice-Hall, Chapt. 5, pp 130-140 &146-167.

• This is a very dense chapter which will be referred to in each lecture through the course as applicable.

• There is also a DVD on Growth in Development in the Nursing Lab called “Pediatric Development” that is kept in a notebook at the back of the lab. Ask the lab assistant if you can’t find it. It can also be accessed on line at: pedidev

• Please complete and print the posttests for the 5 modules and submit to the instructor in the G& D class.
